From breakfast and lunch to dinner and a nightcap — why Viaduct Harbour is the best place to dine anytime this weekend

While summer may be behind us, there’s still a whole lot happening in the city — particularly when it comes to Auckland’s vibrant hospitality scene. This weekend, why not make for Viaduct Harbour, where, despite what time you visit, there’s something exceptional on offer for every taste and proclivity.

Breakfast

Globally acclaimed chef Peter Gordon’s restaurant (and food embassy), Homeland, is known for turning out some of the City’s most deliciously fresh, local fare, and their breakfast offering is the perfect time to sample exactly that. In the morning, you’ll find Pacifica-influenced dishes, such as the vanilla & orange coconut sago topped with fresh kiwi, on offer in amongst inventive dishes that showcase the best of NZ produce. The Turkish eggs with whipped garlic yogurt, Aleppo chilli butter and Dusty Apron sourdough, and the creamed Chatham Islands Pāua on toasted ciabatta both hero local ingredients, and also happen to be two of the tastiest dishes on the menu. The coffee is great, too. Homeland is open from 9am, and we suggest heading down early and nab one of the coveted front tables looking over the sparkling Waitematā Harbour before the crowds descend.

Lunch

Adding to an already extensive list of reason’s to visit, Soul recently added a handful of new dishes to its menu that have become instant hits, and are well worth a trip to the Viaduct stalwart to sample. The crayfish crumpet is a must, served alongside tart grapefruit and mint & pea tendrils, topped with miso butter and bisque, while the Tokyo turnip cakes with beef tartare and oscietra caviar are a tasty starter to share. Come for the food, stay for the extensive drinks list (the 90s-inspired French martini with vanilla vodka, raspberry, pineapple, grand marnier and egg whites is the perfect lunch companion), unmatched views, and always lively vibe. Soul never misses.

Aperitivio

It didn’t take Bivacco long to solidify itself as the place to be for after-work drinks and leisurely weekend lunches alike, with its exceptional fare, extensive list of libations and consistently good vibes to match, and the addition of their ‘Sundown Sessions’ made it the place to be for an afternoon snack and tipple, too. Between 4—6pm on Fridays and Saturdays, until the end of March, here you’ll find a slew of drinks specials and delicious morsels, perfect for a pre-dinner stop off. Rumour has it that Bluff oysters have just hit the menu too.

Dinner

Another gem in Viaduct Harbour’s glistening gastronomic crown, Hello Beasty draws inspiration from Korean, Japanese and Chinese cuisine, and as such, offers flavourful fare that promises to expand your culinary horizons. Dinner is the perfect time to visit, ideally with a hearty appetite, so to sample as many dishes as possible — as choosing just a few is near-impossible. The barbecued sweetcorn with Korean chilli butter is a perfect snack to start on while mulling over the extensive menu, followed closely by a selection of cold cuts (the sashimi selection is stunning), scallop, pork and shrimp potstickers, miso braised brisket bao, and (of course) the katsu sando, which is Hello Beasty’s calling card and an absolute must-try. From there, grab some fried chicken and soft shell crab before moving on to some bigger plates and hibachi. The drinks are sublime too — we recommend the impossibly fresh Umeshu Spritz.

Nightcap

And, finally, when it comes to a nightcap there’s only one place for it: Rooftop at QT Auckland. With a panoramic view across Viaduct Harbour and its consistently lively vibe, the Rooftop at QT Auckland has fast become a popular haunt for a post-dinner drink, and for good reason. Rooftop’s extensive cocktail menu is one of the most inventive in town, with a number of drinks we find it hard to top — the Burnt-Butter Old Fashioned is a tasty take on a classic, while the Shiraz Sling (available on tap, no less) is a quenching mix of Four Pillars gin, yuzu, pineapple, lemon and pomegranate, and, if its sweet satiation that you seek, look no further than the utterly divine Apple of my Eye, which pairs Christian Drouin Le Gin with lychee liqueur, stone fruit liqueur, clarified cucumber and americano aperitivo to exceptional results. Cin cin.

Meet The Runholder — Martinborough’s incredible new hospitality experience where world-class wines & spirits, exceptional fare and striking vistas collide

Nestled on the edge of the famed Martinborough Terrace in the midst of Wairarapa sits The Runholder, an expansive new hospitality beacon by Foley Wines that celebrates the best of the region’s spoils. With its restaurant, tasting room, cellar door, distillery, private dining room and subterranean barrel hall, The Runholder sits pretty on a run of land at Te Kairanga vineyard — a plot originally held by Martinborough’s pioneering namesake, John Martin. Here, you’ll find exquisite local food and drink, striking views, and endless ways to while away a day in paradise.

First and foremost, the expansive space acts as a flagship to two of the region’s most lauded wineries — Te Kairanga and Martinborough Vineyard, and the Lighthouse Gin distillery, with a cellar door for all three, and an incredible culinary offering, too.

Drawing inspiration from the rural landscape and Martinborough’s rich history, Christchurch-based Nott Architects set out to mirror the structure of a farm shed when conceiving the design, incorporating a high pitched, heavily gabled roof. The interiors follow a similar theme, paying homage to Wairarapa’s iconic woolsheds with aged linear timber and open ceilings — creating a sense of both space and intimacy. Celebrating the land and the bounty of the wider region in both design and name, The Runholder is an ode to the richly historied site the building now occupies.

Left: VENISON TARTARE
WAIRARAPA WOOD FIRED LAMB RIBS

When it comes to the impressive food offering, the options are bountiful. With the capacity to seat 100 diners across a series of spaces that span casual to intimate (including a sun-soaked outdoor terrace and a private dining space), here, you’ll find something for every taste and proclivity. Helmed by esteemed chef Tim Smith (formerly executive chef at luxury lodge Wharekauhau and personal chef for the 2014 British Royal Tour of New Zealand and former executive chef at Potatohead in Bali.) The Runholder’s menu celebrates Wairarapa’s abundant produce, crafted to perfectly complement the wines and gin on offer.

Left: HAZELNUT TORTA

Smith’s exacting hand is evident in the elevated but pared-back menu, which comprises the freshest locally sourced and sustainable fare. From antipasti, charcuterie, and cheese platters to sharing plates, charcoal-grilled seafood and prime cuts, and wood-fired pizzas, no matter when you visit, or what your appetite is, you’re guaranteed satiation.

Across the entire menu, dishes are inventive and skillfully prepared — from cured fresh fish served with lime, shallot, olive oil and kumara, to Wairarapa wood-fired lamb ribs with harissa, farro tabbouleh, labneh, and charcoal-grilled octopus, Lighthouse Gin and tomato consommé, roasted peppers and basil seeds, to handmade pizzas topped with simple but beautifully balanced combinations, and platters acting as an exploration of the local landscape.

And as for the drinks list, as one would imagine, the offering is abundant. Here, you’ll find an extensive library of both Te Kairanga and Martinborough Vineyard wines by the glass and bottle (also available as tasting trays and flights) — including cellar and rare wines, and new releases, available alongside limited-edition, barrel-aged editions of Lighthouse Gin.

A regular calendar of events including long lunches, special dinners and musical performances
by likes of the NZSO will be announced in the coming months, as will full details on Toast
Martinborough. The iconic wine & food festival was recently acquired by Foley Wines and will
continue to celebrate the best of the region and the boutique personality of the Martinborough
village. Festival goes can expect full details by August.

At The Runholder, impeccable, locally sourced and crafted food and drink and spectacular surrounds collide in a destination that makes for the perfect escape, where locals and tourists alike are invited to enjoy the spoils of the region under one (exceptionally well-crafted) roof.

Opening Hours:
Sunday to Thursday, 11am until 4pm

Whole roasted mulllet

These are the three must-try dishes on Bar Magda’s new menu — plus an inventive cocktail not to be missed

With the changing of seasons comes a raft of fresh produce, and at Bar Magda, the kitchen team is celebrating this wholeheartedly. Firmly established as not only one of Auckland’s best dining destinations but also one of the most reliably brilliant bars in town, Bar Magda has become a firm favourite in the Denizen office — so, upon hearing about Bar Magda’s new menu, we simply had to investigate.

From spicy tuna to pork belly, whole fish and more, on Bar Magda’s new menu, you’ll find an array of Chef and Co-Owner Carlo Buenaventura’s inventive, new-wave Filipino flavours, with homage paid to the changing of the seasons and the bounty of fresh produce on offer. Our favourite new dishes (as hard as it was to select just three) are the glazed eggplant, pork belly tocino, and whole roasted mullet.

Left: Dragonfruit sour. Right: Glazed eggplant

As well as being a sight to behold, the glazed eggplant is utterly delicious, melding the inherent smokiness of the vegetable with ginger soffrito (an aromatic mix of vegetables, gently cooked to release their flavour) — topped with sourdough croutons to add a distinctive crunch.

Elsewhere on the menu, the pork belly tocino is refined yet authentic, cooked to perfection and served with fresh, crisp fennel slaw, topped with yellow sambal. The sharp, rich heat of the sauce brings an incredible depth of flavour to an exceptionally well-balanced dish. A must-try for those new to the cuisine.

Left: Fig with melon & goat’s cheese. Right: Pork belly tocino

Finally, the whole roasted mullet with blueberry sambal is sublime, pairing the fish with a burst of fresh acidity from the fruit, and a hint of spice from the sambal — a combination that serves to heighten the fish’s natural flavours. Of course, a healthy side of flaky roti is supplied as the perfect accompaniment.

Adding to the delectable, unique and diverse flavours on offer across the menu, the team behind the bar have imagined a cocktail that deserves a special mention, too. Bar Magda’s ‘Dragonfruit Sour’ is not to be missed, melding dragon fruit with Peddlers Shanghai gin, cherry pip cordial, maraschino liqueur and lemon to create a beautifully tart, subtly sweet, and entirely delicious libation.

From start to finish, Bar Magda’s new dishes truly are a delight for the senses. Unique, thoughtful, full of flavour and unlike anything else you’ll experience in this city — these new additions are giving us every excuse to book a table at Bar Magda this week.

Azabu Mission Bay

Dining agenda: Where to go and what to eat right now

As always in our fine city, there are a number of tasty happenings to have on your radar — sure to keep you entertained and satiated. From delectable weekday lunches to set menus, free wine tastings and more, we round up five things to add to your dining agenda right now.

1. Embrace the last of Summer at Azabu Mission Bay

With the promise of a hot, sunny weekend ahead, head East to Mission Bay for a long lunch at Azabu Mission Bay. With it’s park side outdoor dining and extensive menu of Azabu favourites including chicken yakitori from the robata grill, to tuna tostadas, or a selection of deliciously prepared sashimi. Finish the day with a walk, or even better a swim at the beach. The perfect way to enjoy the last few weeks of summer.

2. Make for Sìso, where you’ll find a lunch deal worth checking out

That’s right, Sìso’s beloved Local’s Lunch is back and better than ever. Running 12pm — 3pm Wednesday through Friday, the entirely delicious offering features an entrée and main, plus a glass of Church Road wine, for a modest $45. From the famous crispy calamari with nduja mayo, lemon, and chilli oil, to the chicken Milanese topped with anchovy lemon butter and served with sautéed greens, here, there’s something for every taste and proclivity.

3. Celebrate the start of autumn with Andiamo’s new set menu

Harnessing the spirit of autumn, Andiamo has created a celebratory lunch menu with the fabulous Vavasour wines in mind. Available now, and running for a limited time only, the seasonal set menu is available from Wednesdays to Sundays between 12pm and 3pm, and for a modest $40 per person, includes a glass of Vavasour’s award-winning 2023 Sauvignon Blanc on arrival, followed by two delicious courses showcasing the best of Andiamo’s ever-impressive fare.

4. Head immediately to Amano for their Hot Cross Buns

With Easter only weeks away, now is definitely the time to be getting your fill of our favourite festive treat. Amano Bakery‘s original and chocolate hot cross buns are, in our opinion, some of the very best in town. Best eaten fresh, and ideally straight from the oven. Be an early bird and get the first batch out of the oven (they open at 7am on the weekend). Trust us, you won’t regret it.

Left: ByTheBottle tastings. Right: Amano’s Hot Cross Buns

5. Enjoy a selection of stunning wines (for free) at ByTheBottle

Every Saturday, Mount Eden-based wine shop ByTheBottle hosts free tastings, with each shining a spotlight on a producer or style. This week, Marathon Downs will be in-store pouring their current releases and giving insight into their family-farmed, small-batch, unique hand-crafted wines.

6. Join Rooftop at QT’s Sunday Club, where delicious food & drink and convivial vibes collide

At Rooftop at QT’s Sunday Club, the magic of the weekend runs rife. Here, you’ll instantly forget Monday looms as you settle into a sun-soaked nook, enjoying $2 oysters and $99 bottles of G. H. Mumm Grand Cordon while the DJs set the mood.

Knead on Benson has expanded its offering, introducing an Italian-inspired deli and gelateria

Since opening its doors in 2022, Knead on Benson has been quietly solidifying itself as one of the City’s most consistent and delicious daytime eateries. Adored by locals and those who make the pilgrimage from other parts of Auckland to seek out perfect pastries, sandwiches, pies and cakes from the ever-evolving cabinet, or (for those lucky enough to secure a coveted streetside table) a sit-down brunch that is about as tasty as they come, Knead on Benson is everything a great cafe should be.

Now, its founders have taken over the space directly next door, converting the ex-dairy into a European-style deli stocking pantry provisions and serving scoops of house-made gelato and sorbet supplied by sister eatery Takapuna Beach Cafe. Called ‘Knead Next Door,’ the space also doubles as a working kitchen for the pastry team, so always promises a vibrant and bustling atmosphere, adding to the ever-convivial vibe at the neighbourhood cafe.

“Expanding Knead on Benson and taking over the space next door was a matter of necessity to accommodate our growing business,” director James Bryant tells me. “But it was also an opportunity to add to the Knead experience. Taking over a longstanding former dairy, we wanted kids and neighbours to continue to be able to pop in for ice cream or to grab the paper and a bottle of milk,” Bryant continues.

After seeing an increase in demand for their bread, the team at Knead on Benson spotted an opportunity to expand their offering with the addition of elevated pantry products that pair perfectly with the loaves available. “We wanted to introduce a retail space selling top quality accompaniments for our bread (currently sourdough, five-grain loaf and croissant loaf) to offer our customers everything they’d find at a traditional European deli, where everything they might need for a tasty lunch or light dinner is available in one place,” says Bryant.

Indeed, there is an increasing desire for fine foods and quality pantry goods as we continue to see our culinary culture inspired by European metropolises. At the deli, you’ll find a curated selection of charcuterie, fine meats and cheeses, locally-made and imported oils, salts, vinegars, mustards, sauces and spreads, tinned and smoked fish, Knead’s house-made products including the much-loved granola and homemade jam, and more. “Everything that’s sold in the cabinet at Knead on Benson, from croissants to cakes, is made from scratch in the new Knead Next Door space,” confirms Bryant.

And leaning further into the Italian inspiration, the team have also added a gelato and sorbet offering, serving irresistible, homemade scoops made in-house at the stalwart seaside eatery, Takapuna Beach Cafe (which is run by Knead on Benson’s owners). When it comes to the gelato, you’ll find the usual favourites — from salted caramel to chocolate hazelnut, vanilla bean and honeycomb, passionfruit yogurt and more. And as for the sorbet — mango, strawberry, lemon and espresso all feature.

From its thoughtful offering to its flavoursome scoops and lively location, Knead Next Door is the perfect place to pop into for weekend supplies and a delicious sweet treat.

Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday, 6:30am until 4pm
Friday to Sunday, 6:30am until 5pm

Open public holidays.

Andiamo’s new set menu is a delicious celebration of autumn

While the calendar officially reads autumn, the long, warm days of summer remain, so naturally it’s to one of our favourite Herne Bay haunts that we flock. As beloved for its delicious food as it is for its coveted outdoor tables that get the best of the late afternoon sun, Andiamo is the perfect place to mark the changing of seasons, and now, the stalwart eatery is giving us the perfect excuse to lock in a long lunch.

Vavasour Pinot Noir and Focaccia with red pepper & parmesan butter

Harnessing the spirit of autumn, Andiamo has created a celebratory lunch menu with the fabulous Vavasour wines in mind. Available now, and running for a limited time only, the seasonal set menu will be available from Wednesdays to Sundays between 12pm and 3pm, and for a modest $40 per person, will include a glass of Vavasour’s award winning 2023 Sauvignon Blanc on arrival, followed by two delicious courses comprising Andiamo’s iconic focaccia with red pepper and parmesan butter, and your choice of market fish with ajo blanco, grape, and pine nut, or the tasty tomato risotto with soffritto, stracciatella, and basil. And if you’re feeling indulgent, for an additional $9 you can finish on something sweet with a ‘Tiramisu bambina’ (a classic tiramisu in mini size).

And for those who can’t make lunch, a curated selection of Vavasour’s finest wines will be on offer — no matter the hour, to complement your dining experience. Four beautiful pours, all inspired by the nuances of Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, are available for a limited time.

Ahi is raising the bar with the introduction of its new, alcohol-free wild sodas

With an increasing desire for delicious alcohol-free drinks in bars and restaurants, more and more venues are upping the ante on their drinks lists, and Ahi is one such establishment — introducing an incredible selection of probiotic wild sodas, naturally fermented with ingredients from the Ahi Garden.

Bar Manager Egor Petrov is behind the new drinks, carefully selecting herbs, fruit, and flowers from the Ahi Garden, and pairing these incredible ingredients with raw honey and water to brew gut-loving, healthy tonics. “Good and bad bacteria is all around us, and it’s their misbalance that makes us sick.” says Petrov, before continuing “I wanted to create drinks at Ahi that counter this, reimagining the traditional restaurant and bar offering with the addition of healthy tonics that are rich in good bacteria and support the gut microbiome.”

left to right: Apple Mint and Flowering Basil

My job as a ‘fermentologist’ is to create an environment where good bacteria thrive and bad bacteria don’t — and that’s what I’ve done with our wild sodas.” Going further than the standard kombuchas you’ll find on many drinks menus when dining out, these sodas are unique in that typical ferments are made with a ready culture (like a scoby), but Petrov relies solely on the probiotic bacteria that live on the plants in Ahi’s garden. “I believe that this is a healthier way to ferment probiotic drinks, because a kombucha scoby or a kefir grain will produce alcohol as a byproduct of fermentation, but the method I’m using relies on natural bacteria that lowers the PH of the fermented beverage instead.” Petrov tells me.

The first of their kind in New Zealand, seasonal ingredients available in the garden will dictate the ever-changing flavours of the wild sodas. For now, you’ll find the likes of crisp Apple & Mint, a beautifully balanced flowering basil iteration, and a unique field blend of apple marigold, lemon balm and amaranth.

What we’re eating this week: Ebisu’s delectable bento boxes are worth seeking out

This week, we are collectively craving Ebisu’s deliciously fresh, entirely satisfying bento boxes — a curated selection of the eatery’s most-loved Japanese fare. Here, at the Britomart stalwart (and long-time favourite of Team Denizen) the bento boxes sit as a delectable smorgasbord of the contemporary Japanese flavours Ebisu has been known for turning out across the past decade.

Each box, available for a modest $39 per person (or $49 with the addition of a glass of wine or tap beer), features a tasty mix of free-range karaage chicken, tuna sashimi salad, homemade pickles, miso soup, and steamed rice, served with your choice of either free-range teriyaki chicken, chargrilled Angus scotch fillet with wafu sauce, daily market fish with yuzu ponzu & white miso puree, or crispy, fried teriyaki tofu. Better still, there’s an option to upgrade your rice to either a salmon avocado roll or the teriyaki chicken iteration, for $7, or swap out your karaage chicken to crisp soft-shell crab for $10.

Be it a quick lunchtime bite or a delicious dinner paired with a bottle or two of satiating sake for the table, we suggest making for Ebisu this weekend and indulging in one of the delightful bento boxes yourself. And if this style of eating isn’t for you, you’ll find a menu packed with fresh sushi and sashimi, mouthwatering meats, inventive vegetarian dishes and flavourful umami bites — sure to satisfy any and every taste and proclivity.

Hello Beasty's moreish prawn & crab toast

Iconic Auckland Eats have unveiled their 2024 list, rounding up 100 of the region’s most delicious dishes

The 2024 Iconic Auckland Eats list, featuring 100 of Auckland’s top dishes as nominated by the public, has just been released — giving Aucklanders and those visiting a comprehensive guide to what to eat across the region. Developed annually, the list sits as a celebration of Auckland’s incredible, diverse culinary scene, highlighting unique and beloved dishes bespoke to Tāmaki Makaurau.

Left: Bar Magda’s lamb ribs. Right: Cassia’s Pani Puri

Now in its fourth year, Iconic Auckland Eats was established by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited as a way to showcase the vibrancy of the region’s gastronomic offering, highlighting legendary dishes that range from fine dining to cheap and cheerful — covering everything in between, too. The dishes, submitted for consideration by locals, capture the essence of Auckland, embodying the cultural melting pot and richness that makes the region so special.

When it comes to what’s included, many Denizen favourites made the cut — from Bar Magda’s beautiful lamb ribs, served with pyanggang, green sambal, and a soft herb salad, to Amano’s famous scampi pasta (swoon), Depot’s fish sliders — unsurprisingly on the list for four years running, and Hello Beasty’s moreish prawn & crab toast.

Left: Sneaky Snacky’s hot chicken donut burger. Right: Amano’s scampi pasta

Icons like Eden Noodles’ dumplings in spicy sauce, Fish Smith’s fish tacos, Gochu’s milk bun, The Oyster Inn’s Te Matuku oysters, Soul Bar’s mouthwatering macaroni cheese, and Daily Bread’s irresistible custard square all feature, too, in amongst quirkier additions — from Lilian’s prosciutto and grape pizza to Sumthin Dumplin’s beef and cheese iteration, Sneaky Snacky’s hot chicken donut burger, Culprit’s ‘ugly carrots’, and Ahi’s scampi corndogs (a must try).

Left: Gochu’s milk bun. Right: Sumthin Dumplin’s beef & cheese Dumplings

As has been the case since the initiative’s inception, the variety of cuisines on the list reflects the incredible mix of ethnicities in Auckland, and each nominated dish has a story behind the submission, with locals sharing insight into what the dish means to them.

While reading through the thousands of submissions, the team behind Iconic Auckland Eats selects a favourite entry that embodies the list’s ethos. Embrace the sleek sophistication of Photo Finish Hair — the tress trend of the moment

With awards season in full swing, London Fashion Week coming to a close, and Milan and Paris fashion weeks just around the corner, the breakout hair trend of the year is making its mark: picture-perfect, sleek, silky, photo finish hair. According to hairstylist to the stars and industry stalwart Sam McKnight, there’s been a definitive move (back) towards more done hair, where subtle volume, shine, and gloss reign supreme.

A step back from slick buns, the idea here is a cool girl ponytail with a luxe, mirror-shine finish. To achieve the look, cleanse hair — thoroughly rinsing to avoid conditioner residue, before using heat tools to completely smooth any frizz or flyaways. Once light and fresh, sweep the hair into a tight pony using lightweight styling products to boost shine, before finishing with an oil — the secret to runway-ready locks.

Jaimie Webster Haines’ eponymous label is popping up on Faraday Street this weekend — and you don’t want to miss it

When it comes to dressing in 2024, aesthetics are only one piece of an intricately woven puzzle. Wearability, versatility, functionality and durability all play an important part, amongst a host of other considerations — something Jaimie Webster Haines understands implicitly. Her eponymous label, Jaimie, is popping up this Thursday — Saturday at My Exhibition on Faraday Street in Parnell, showcasing the designer’s beautifully considered collection and offering styling advice and insight into the brand.

Left: London Shirt Release #01. Right: Bow Bow Bag

Having worked as a DJ, model and most recently, designer, both in New Zealand and abroad, Jaimie launched her label as an extension of her creative world — bringing together her passions for art, fashion, photography, and music, with her innate design sensibility and impeccable eye for detail to offer a concise edit of timeless, quality garments.

London Shirts & Karate Pants both from Release #01

The ethos behind Jaimie (the label, although the same could be said for the woman) is first and foremost centred on quality. Jaimie sources linens from Japan and Turkey and wool and cashmere from Italy, taking care to select fabrics that have enduring appeal and are built to last. The brand also utilises deadstock and textile mill leftovers where possible, as well as producing in small quantities — all with an eye to the environmental impact of the business. When it comes to production, Jaimie looks to local artisans and suppliers, carefully choosing partners that share her uncompromising commitment to craft and detail. The resulting pieces — from beautifully tailored shirts and trousers rendered in classic linen and the best quality cotton (the core of the label’s offering) to the occasional easy wearing dress or stand out accessory, are crafted with the objective of enhancing the daily life of the wearer. Any given piece by Jaime promises to provide not only comfort, but an intrinsic, emotional comfort, too — and an innate sense of confidence.

But don’t just take our word for it. The thing about quality design, exceptional fabrics and considered craftsmanship is that you need to experience it first-hand to truly appreciate its appeal. Knowing this, and in celebration of her new pieces and the launch of her website, Jaimie is taking up residence this weekend in the beautiful My Exhibition space. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the collection and Jaimie herself, who is around all weekend offering styling advice, insight into the garments, and of course, serving up epic tunes.

The Jaimie pop-up is running from Thursday 22nd — Saturday 24th February at My Exhibition, located at 15 Faraday Street.

Voices of Hope’s new audio-visual exhibition is an illuminating exploration of mental health in New Zealand

It’s no secret that the statistics around New Zealand’s poor mental health are staggering. Our nation’s rates of mental health challenges are shockingly disproportionate to the rest of the world, and often, it’s our most vulnerable communities that are the most greatly impacted. But increasingly, we’re seeing heed paid to an issue that has long been shied away from — with a growing number of Kiwis having the courage to speak up and seek support, and in doing so, inspiring those around them to acknowledge their own feelings.

There are a host of charities in New Zealand doing incredible work in this space — changing the narrative, raising awareness, removing the stigma, and shifting our collective thinking to incite radical change. One such organisation is Voices Of Hope, whose goal is spreading hope through the voices of those with lived experience. They also provide a safe space for those facing mental health challenges. This month, the charity is furthering their important and impactful work, shining the spotlight on a diverse range of individuals through a moving audio-visual exhibition entitled Behind the Smile

Within the exhibition, open to the public now at Allpress Studio, 11 everyday kiwis have been profiled, shot by renowned photographer Tom Gould to capture the essence of each person in their ‘happy place’. The series features intimate, raw interviews that reveal the lived experiences and mental health struggles each person has faced, portraying vulnerability and strength through Gould’s moving portraiture. The hope is that, by witnessing a group of New Zealanders from all walks of life laying themselves and their struggles bare, others will be empowered to tell their stories and seek support, too.

Everyone faces struggles you can’t see behind the smile, and while this campaign and exhibition set out to spread hope to people who may be struggling, it also sits as a call to arms for us all to look past the surface and be more aware, empathetic, and in touch with our humanity.

Behind the Smile is a free exhibition at Allpress Studio, running from 16th February — 8th March

Sights set on a European jaunt? Journey in style on one of Ponant’s Grand Voyages

As summer draws to a close we’re finding ourselves dreaming of journeys to far-flung places, filling our calendars with holiday bookings to quell any post-summer blues. As always, Europe beckons, but instead of making for the usual metropolises we’re eager to explore lesser-known locales, seeking a vacation outside of the ordinary.

As well as scouting for destinations to explore anew, we’re considering our mode of transport, so as to maximise vacation time, and there’s a certain type of travel that sees a trip become as much about the journey as the destination. Yes, we’re talking about seafaring, and we’ve got our sights firmly set on the intimate luxury and exceptional itineraries of Ponant’s Grand Voyages. Ponant, the elevated French cruising company founded by a group of professional sailors in 1988, has been perfecting the art of sea exploration since its inception, and now, the 13-fleet company specialising in small vessel cruising has expanded their offering with the addition of their incredible Grand Voyages through Europe.

Ponant’s ships are yacht-like in style, hosting between 32 — 264 guests per voyage, which, when combined with quiet, comfortable spaces, hospitality excellence, and luxurious offerings encompassing spas & salons, entertainment areas, shopping and more, makes for an experience akin to sailing on a private yacht of your very own.

When it comes to the voyages themselves, few do it better than Ponant. Their experts know travel better than most and take immense pride in not only creating incredible onboard offerings, but mapping out exceptional itineraries that offer guests insight into the authentic beauty of the world — featuring visits to iconic ports, as well as exotic destinations that are off the beaten path.

For an in-depth exploration of the Mediterranean, look to the all-encompassing Lisbon to Antalya route — a 29-day voyage traversing seven countries and calling at 28 ports. Here, you’ll discover the major cities of the Iberian Peninsula; explore UNESCO world heritage sites — from the Silk Exchange in Valencia to the tower of Belém, the Acropolis in Athens, and more; discover the captivating beauty of the Balearic; dive into the azure waters of Sardinia and Sicily; journey between Malta, Italy, Greece and Turkey, discovering some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful antique sites in early spring; and much, much more. This is a truly magical, once in a lifetime exploration of Europe not to be missed.

Or, perhaps it’s the intrigue of Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Lithuania, Poland, and Denmark on the Helsinki to Lisbon route that will prove your ideal voyage. On this 12-country, 24-port journey, tailored to curious and discerning travellers, you’ll be met with not only an incredibly well-curated exploration across 26 days (with excursions in major cities and lesser-known locations — from Amsterdam, Antwerp and Stockholm to the charming coastal town of Scheveningen and the Hanseatic Town of Visby), but incredible insight into the destinations, too, with onboard Smithsonian Journeys experts and an exclusive discussion with former President of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize-laureate, Lech Wałęsa, while in Gdansk.

However, if it’s an exploration of the ancient sites of Greece, Croatia, Italy, Slovenia and Turkey that you seek, look no further than the Antalya to Venice voyage. Spanning five countries and 16 ports across just over two weeks, this varied cruise journeys through lively cities, historic sites and charming beaches — from the pearls of the Cyclades (Santorini, Delos, and Mykonos) to the striking landscapes of Puglia, The Acropolis of Athens, the sacred island of Delos and more, this trip aboard Ponant’s sleek, refined L’Austral ship is a guaranteed journey to remember.
