With exceptional coffee and a tasty all-day menu, Young Dandy is the laid-back new cafe in Parnell you need to try

“Vibes, vibes, vibes indeed” is what you’ll find at Young Dandy, a laid-back new cafe in the heart of Parnell that opened its doors last week. Owner/operator James Prendergast set out to create a fun, relaxed, and above all, welcoming spot that turns out epic food and great coffee, with consistently excellent service. Sounds easy, right? Not really, but from what we’ve seen so far, Prendergast has hit his mark.

Right: Vadouvan spiced mushrooms

Having spent the last two decades gaining international hospo experience through his time spent living and working in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand, Prendergast fell into a career in hospitality organically, as many do, but what he found was much more than he could ever have anticipated when starting out. Working with Ozone Coffee in London, he jumped at the chance to relocate to Auckland to open their Grey Lynn site in 2019 as the Restaurant General Manager, “The way the Auckland community embraced Ozone made it such a special time,” he recalls, “I then knew that Auckland was the place I wanted to sink my teeth into and open my own place. I have been a Sales Manager for Ozone Coffee wholesale for the past two years, supporting people to build their own dream cafe spaces. Now it’s my turn.”

Unsurprisingly, given Prendergast’s background, Young Dandy is a cafe with a core focus on speciality coffee, paired with, in his words, “damn fine everyday food and attention to service.” He tells me that, for him, a cafe needs to embody community and be accessible to its everyday customers, which is why Young Dandy will be operating seven days a week.

The Fish Toast

Spotting a location in Parnell that matched his vision for a place of his own, Pendergast set to work, getting stuck in and taking on the bulk of the design work himself. Having a background in Fine Arts means Prendergast possess an effortless attention to detail that has set him in great stead, and after a trip back home to Europe last year, he found that the hospo businesses that Inspired him most had really simple approaches to their fit out design, “They were typically small and intimate environments which had unique appeal to me,” he recalls, “The space Young Dandy is in is naturally stunning, with exposed brick and concrete flooring which you don’t often come across in Auckland — especially brick. It made me want to keep things simple, because the materials are features in themselves.” he continues, “I decided to make a lot of the furniture myself, which I saw as another way of being able to express myself in the space.”

Left: The Falafel

On the food front, the focus is on everyday food, done well. “Young Dandy is serious about the execution of simple things,” Prendergast tells me, “As we’ve been working on the menu, we’ve constantly been guided by the idea that our food has to be uncomplicated. Simple, but excellent.” As such, you’ll find breakfast and brunch classics that we all know and love, with the addition of lunch specials to appeal to the local business community. Heading up the small kitchen is Amy Barrowclough (previously Ozone Coffee’s Head Chef), and, according to Prendergast, immediate favourites are the Smoked Brisket on Corn Bread, the Beetroot Falafel Salad, and the decadent French Toast on the weekend. There’s also a cabinet with a curated collection of the classics, with plans to expand into catering for local businesses later in the year.

When it comes to the drinks on offer, great coffee comes first, with a delicious selection of teas, juices and smoothies made in-house. There are plans to expand the offering to include beer, wine, and cocktails, with Pendergast excited to bring his years of wine and cocktail experience into the menu.

Southern Station Wagyu Brisket

Having only opened last week, Young Dandy is already making a name for itself — embracing locals like old friends, and serving up what we’ve heard is some of the best coffee in town. In James’ words, “Young Dandy is about community, from the people who work here to our customers and people who use the space. Parnell has seen a few new businesses come to the area recently, and I’m so looking forward to being part of that new wave and contributing to the Parnell community.”

With plans to expand into events — from cooking classes to book clubs and coffee workshops, and a few exciting chef pop-ups on the horizon, it’s clear that what Prendergast has set out to create with Young Dandy is much more than a laid-back local. Although it’s very much that too. Watch this space.

Runway Report: We round up the best looks from Gucci’s Spring Summer 2025 men’s show

Sabato de Sarno’s latest collection for Gucci speaks of encounters, or ‘incontri’, between the city and the beach, a collective reference approached both quite literally in Sarno’s surf-inspired wares and bright, bold colours, and more subtly in the collection’s utilitarian forms. Here, we round up our favourite looks, from elevated yet informal suiting to bold prints to pops of neon and blush.

We discover a small car with a big presence in Lexus’ LBX — its launch marking a new era for the legacy brand

When it came time to hand over the keys after a week spent behind the wheel of Lexus’ first-ever LBX, I realised just how much I’d enjoyed driving this car. Zipping around the city can be a somewhat (read: very) stressful affair, given my rambunctious toddler is often along for the ride, but this week I truly enjoyed my time spent navigating the streets of Auckland — even as my daughter made her many demands known from the back seat.

I’ll admit that these days, given my life of two halves (spent between toddler pick ups, drop offs, and play dates, and navigating the demands of deadlines, meetings, and events), when it comes to my vehicle, two things are essential: practicality and ease. As I took off in the LBX, I quickly realised that I had found the pinnacle of both in one sleek SUV.

Setting off in the car for the first time, I was immediately struck by the interior, which felt surprisingly spacious (given the car’s modest size), with carefully considered, luxurious finishes adding a sense of comfort I’ve only ever experienced in ultra high-end vehicles. From the monochromatic seating rendered in leather and Ultrasuede™ to the beautifully soft steering trim, the LBX felt just as plush as many of Lexus’ larger, more pricey models. The dashboard’s design is clean and uncluttered, and the central touchscreen is a great size and simple to use, although given the built-in voice control and wireless Apple CarPlay, I barely touched it at all. The head up display just beyond the steering wheel was new to me, but proved helpful for ensuring my driving speed was in keeping with the local speed limits without taking my eyes off the road ahead.

“The driver-vehicle connection felt seamless, while the hybrid powertrain featuring a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine, and high-output bipolar hybrid battery made for an efficient drive.”

As I settled into the car and discovered more about its nuances, the superior handling and the smoothness of the driving experience ultimately won me over. While Lexus is known for considered vehicles that offer exceptional drives, the new, luxuriously crafted hybrid LBX takes the marque’s modus operandi to new heights.

Catering to discerning drivers seeking luxury and practicality, this car is perfectly suited to urbanites with an active lifestyle — particularly given the brand’s move towards a more personalised offering in the LBX. In a move away from vehicle ‘grades’, the LBX ushers in Lexus’ ‘moods’ — meaning that the three iterations of the LBX (Active, Cool, and Relax) are tailored to the behaviour and mood of the unique driver — reflecting individual lifestyles and aesthetics.

My LBX was a ‘Cool’ and, as such, looked sleek and sophisticated no matter the angle. An All-Wheel drive with 18” black alloy wheels and a slick exterior combining a low-slung bonnet, aligned roof, and contoured bumper, in this car, the driver-vehicle connection felt seamless, while the hybrid powertrain featuring a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine, and high-output bipolar hybrid battery made for an efficient drive.

The LBX is ultra smooth and comfortable to drive. The hybrid system is near-silent, while the engine, when it does fire up, barely makes a thrum (I had to check more than once whether the car was actually on). From the driver’s seat, you feel high off the road and can barely detect bumps, while the steering, accelerating, and braking were the smoothest I’ve experienced.

When I took to the open road, I found that the LBX also cleverly adjusts acceleration and deceleration based on road conditions, while the All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control function ensures a secure gap from the vehicle in front by matching its speed, adding an extra layer of safety — something that gave me real peace of mind with my daughter in the car. And when it came to slotting myself into many a tricky parallel park on Ponsonby Road, the LBX’s front and rear parking sensors and reversing camera did the heavy lifting for me — the 360-degree bird’s eye view camera adding an extra level of comfort that I now don’t think I can go without.

Ultimately, what I found in the Lexus LBX was a car perfectly tailored to my current lifestyle. Prioritising comfort, ease, safety, and, yes, style at every turn — from the sleek exterior to the plush interiors, hybrid tech, impeccable handling, practical size, and exterior that exudes style and presence that transcends its size, this is a car made for fast-paced life in the city — offering not only the means to get you from one place to the next, but a moment of reprieve while doing so. I think it’s fair to say that I’ve found my next runabout, the only question is… can I pull off blue?

The Prawn Burger with House-made Prawn patty and Burgout coleslaw

Burgout is the delicious new neighbourhood burger joint with a tasty Korean slant

While Burgout may be a pared-back, casual takeaway burger joint, to owner Youngkaung Lee, it’s much more. The culmination of his passion for great food, a homage to his Korean heritage, and the realisation of a lifelong dream to open a place of his own, Burgout — Auckland’s newest grab-and-go eatery, is a unique spot indeed.

The (Korean-style) Chicken Burger

In dreaming up his first solo venture, having cheffed for 11 years, including as part of the opening team at another casual eatery in the city, Lee sought to bring something novel to Auckland’s diverse dining scene. Looking to his heritage for inspiration, he landed on a Korean-style burger concept, and set to work crafting a series of mouthwatering burgers and sides that would honour his heartland while leaning into the gastronomic art of simplicity.

The Vegetable Burger

As such, the menu is concise and considered, with five burgers and two sides, served alongside a number of tasty drinks — with Korean milkshakes soon to join the fold. The Classic Burger is exactly that, a classic combination of double smash patties and double cheese, while the Chicken Burger featuring Korean chicken and traditional yangnyeom chicken sauce offers a flavourful taste of Korea. Burgout’s Signature Burger sees a handmade beef patty marinated with Korean BBQ (bulgogi) sauce, while the delectable Prawn Burger offers a unique take, with a handmade prawn patty paired with coleslaw and mustard mayo. There is also a delicious Vegetable Burger on the menu, brimming with crisp vegetable tempura.

Top to bottom: The Signature burger & The Prawn Burger (with a Handmade Prawn patty)

When it comes to the sides, mouthwatering Korean chicken strips are served with the same, traditional yangnyeom chicken sauce you’ll find in the Chicken Burger, while the fries are served with Lee’s special seasoning — an essential add-on to any meal.

The space itself is pared-back and lends itself to the casual, grab-and-go vibe, with an open kitchen and tiled counter reminiscent of an American diner, with a Korean-inspired slant. But really, the experience of Burgout is in Lee’s evident passion for his craft. Preparing everything himself by hand, and striving to greet every customer that comes through the door, Lee is elevating the experience of a takeaway spot — bringing a true taste of Korea, both the food and the hospitality, to the neighbourhood community of Onehunga.

Give interiors a seasonal shake-up with this unexpected, chic colour combination

Art direction — Amber Armitage/ Marigold

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, trends (particularly those attached to colour palettes and tones) tend to ebb and flow with the seasons. Some, however, have staying power, and when it comes to conceiving a colour for the interior of your home, looking to hues that draw from nature will guarantee a degree of timeless appeal. This season, it is the combination of earthy olive greens and clean cream tones that we are loving, a pairing that promises to infuse any living space with warmth, sophistication and a touch of the natural world.

Olive green, reminiscent of lush foliage and offering a sense of calm tranquillity, serves as the anchor of this aesthetic palette. Its muted tones exude a sense of understated luxury making it an ideal backdrop for any room in the house. Paired with creamy neutrals, such as soft ivory or warm taupe, olive green takes on an elevated elegance, and can easily be used to create a space that feels simultaneously cosy and chic. Of course, before considering any major colour changes, it is always to the experts at Resene that we turn first, who not only know how to combine colours in a way that brings out the best of each, but who posses a deep understanding of the kinds of olive and cream hues that will work specifically.

For those seeking a contemporary look, pairing olive green walls with sleek, minimalist furniture and metallic accents can create a sophisticated urban oasis. Look at colours like Resene Miso and Resene Iko Iko to achieve the best outcome, and pair them with others like Resene Organic or Resene Rewilding, to get that olive and cream combination down perfectly. Alternatively, using a tone like Resene Beryl Green as the base and incorporating olive green accents in hues like Resene Gold and Resene Xanadu will, particularly when paired with natural textures and luxurious upholstery, lend a cool, rustic charm to your space.

In today’s fast-paced world, creating a sanctuary where one can unwind and recharge is more important than ever, and thanks to its organic hues inspired by the outdoors, this calming colour combination fosters a sense of tranquillity and balance, turning any room into a retreat from the stress and busyness of daily life.

Martinborough Vineyard is unveiling its rare and coveted new release with an unmissable event

As one of the first areas in the country to plant New Zealand Pinot Noir and to put it on the map globally, Martinborough offers an arguably more complex and interesting palate than its contemporaries. Martinborough Vineyard is one of the region’s most historic wineries, and an iconic producer of New Zealand Pinot Noir, with their impeccable new release — the sixth iteration of their lauded ‘Marie Zelie’ Reserve Pinot Noir, taking this mantle to new heights.

A rare and coveted fine wine carrying the hallmarks of Martinborough Vineyard’s pioneering style and impeccable reputation, Marie Zelie is a wine made only in outstanding vintages, with this 2019 vintage being only the sixth release of its kind across the past 20 years, and the first in over a decade.

Left: Winemaker Paul Mason

The 2019 vintage is Chief Winemaker Paul Mason’s fourth Marie Zelie, within which parcels from some of New Zealand’s oldest Pinot Noir vines were carefully cultivated by Viticulturist Dave Shepherd, hand-picked, and pressed. Aged for 13 months in selected French oak barriques, the wine was bottled in July 2020 and has spent four years resting in Martinborough Vineyard’s cellar awaiting it’s anticipated release. The resulting drop is elegant, sophisticated and seamless, displaying the finest hallmarks of a great Martinborough Pinot Noir; brooding intensity, richness, and depth of flavour. It is extremely limited in volume with just five barrels selected, resulting in only 1,471 coveted bottles of the 2019 vintage.

Having already been awarded 98 Points by top US critic James Suckling, this wine will represent a strong proposition to connoisseurs considering it alongside its Burgundian counterparts.

To be among the first to try this incredible drop, secure a spot at The Hotel Britomart’s celebration of the new release on Thursday, June 20th. Join Chief Winemaker Paul Mason and wine storyteller David Nash at an intimate degustation dinner, with Marie Zelie wines matched with a five-course degustation menu, curated by The Libraries executive chef Andrew Lautenbach. Tickets are $199 per person, and bookings can be made here.

Sign up to the Foley Wine Club here to be amongst the first to access this limited allocation wine.

For sun-seekers looking for the royal treatment, paradise is found at Fiji’s Vatuvara Private Islands

For our sins, we can’t resist the undeniable allure of travel destinations favoured by the world’s most-known figures. Somehow, the seal of approval from celebrity royalty (and, in this case, real-life royalty) carries far more weight than a star rating or review ever could. We were pleasantly surprised to recently discover that Fiji — just a short three hour flight away, is home to many private island resorts that often play host to some of the world’s most notable names, with one destination in particular in hot demand amongst this cohort.

Offering utterly luxurious accommodation at one of Fiji’s most picturesque locations, Vatuvara Private Islands offers guests not only unparalleled amenities, but an unprecedented immersion into Fiji’s magnificent culture. Just three secluded villas, across 800 acres, meld into the island’s lush landscape at Vatuvara, offering an unmatched level of privacy. The villas, as you’d expect given the resort’s calibre, set a new benchmark for luxury travel — each perched cliffside above the Pacific’s shimmering azure waters, complete with a heated infinity pool, personal massage room (and private masseuse), expansive decks, and your very own white sand beach. When it comes to dining (as with everything else at Vatuvara) the focus here is a light touch. The entire island runs on solar-power, with an organic farm and greenhouse providing food for the island’s two on-site restaurants.

At both full-service, five-star eateries, every aspect of the food on offer is approached with respect and reverence for the land and ocean surrounds — from the fresh fish caught sustainably from the surrounding ocean waters, to the virgin coconut oil produced from the island’s many coco palms, and lagoon sea salt — sourced directly from the surrounding Pacific waters. The resort is also home to an impressive fitness and wellness centre, with all of the amenities to continue (or level up) your routine — from yoga to boxing, Pelotons, reformers, and more, plus a 20-metre lap pool. And if it’s culture, or adventure, that you seek, you’ll find both here aplenty.

From exploring one of the most exotic natural reserves in the world to enjoying a multitude of exceptional activities — from hiking, paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkelling, diving, and exploring uninhabited islands nearby, to immersive cultural events that offer unmatched insight into the charming Fijian way of life. At Vatuvara, guests are invited not only to observe the exquisite environment that surrounds them, but to engage in an experience that is so special, it is impossible to replicate.

Every Sunday, Jervois Steak House’s Auckland location will be serving up what has now become known as (arguably) the best roast in town, available weekly across June and July to see us through the winter months in satisfying style. The next two weeks are already sold out, so we suggest you make your booking ASAP to avoid missing out.

Unsurprisingly, the delectable offering is centred on beef, cooked to perfection. For $49 per person, guests will be treated to expertly-roasted Ōhau Farm Wagyu beef, complimented by a creamy potato gratin, seasonal vegetables, house-made Yorkshire puddings, and JSH’s signature gravy. And if you fancy a tipple, there’s the option to add a house wine for $10.

Jervois Steak House’s infamous roast dinner is available every Sunday across June and July, from 5.30pm onwards. Reservations are essential* (for a minimum of two people), and pre-payment is required — so round up the family and secure your spot now to round out the week well.

*To be eligible for the Sunday Roast promotion, it must be selected during the booking process.

Wellness space Hana has opened a stunning new location in Parnell, and we have all of the details

Hana, the incredible wellness destination conceived by former pharmacist Sara Higgins, was one of the country’s very first venues to offer infrared saunas, red light therapy, and contrast therapy — with Higgins calling on her extensive expertise and personal learnings to bring a unique offering to Aucklanders. Now, it seems everyone has cottoned on to the incredible benefits of these treatments, with infrared saunas and ice baths popping up everywhere you look — but no one does it quite like Hana, and their new Parnell locale promises to take self-care to new heights.

Hana’s new Parnell Wellness Space

Hana’s serene new spot, over two years in the making, offers a welcome respite for those seeking rejuvenation, balance, and a ritualistic escape from the daily grind. Taking the decision to open the doors to a second venue is hardly surprising, given the incredible success of their first location and the overwhelmingly positive response to the unique blend of healing services on offer. And as more people learn of the undeniable benefits of holistic wellness practices, Hana’s fanbase — and clientele, only grows.

Left: Hana’s private Parnell infrared sauna rooms. Right: Hana’s private Parnell contrast therapy rooms

Alongside infrared saunas, red light therapy, ice baths, and massage therapy, Hana’s new outpost will be offering a personalised service to support client’s specific health goals, with tailored programmes designed by highly experienced naturopaths and nutritionists to address client’s specific health goals. With a career background as a pharmacist, with nutritional and environmental medicine training, Higgins is perfectly placed to bring a more health-focused slant to Hana’s beauty and wellness offering. “I love that we are expanding treatments to create bespoke wellness pathways to support our clientele,” Higgins tells me, “From fertility to pregnancy, sports injuries, skin concerns, nutrition and immunity, everyone’s health needs are unique.”

Hana’s new Parnell private contrast therapy rooms

The space itself, as has become a given when the door reads Hana, is stunning, serene, and thoughtfully-designed. Collaborating with Pennant & Triumph, Higgins conceived the new Parnell location to cultivate calm, reflecting the elevated ambience of Hana’s Grey Lynn flagship. Here, a signature palette of travertine and rendered plaster is complimented in treatment rooms by sage green Japanese textured tiles, and brass fixtures, with soft lighting casting the space an enchanting glow.

In terms of the benefits of the treatments on offer, we asked Sara to break down everything you need to know.

01. Hana Treatment
Red Light Therapy

Red Light therapy, celebrated for its rejuvenating properties, has become a favourite among clients seeking to enhance their skin’s appearance and overall health. Full-body Photobiomodulation therapy pods utilise red and near-infrared light to optimise mitochondrial function, the powerhouse of cells. Enhanced mitochondrial performance translates to increased energy and a reduced risk of disease. Scientifically backed, this treatment also repairs sun damage, reduces wrinkles, speeds muscle recovery, heals scars and stretch marks, reduces inflammation, boosts testosterone levels, and enhances collagen production.

02. Hana Treatment
Contrast Therapy

Contrast therapy, which combines a hot sauna with a two-minute ice bath immersion, offers numerous benefits such as reducing inflammation and boosting metabolism. In the Parnell location, one of the contrast rooms features a traditional sauna with elevated heat settings, allowing clients to experience a more pronounced contrast between hot and cold.

03. Hana Treatment
Massage

Hana also provides healing therapeutic and pregnancy massages to reduce tension and promote recovery and overall wellbeing. These treatments utilise techniques tailored to individual needs to alleviate muscle soreness, improve circulation, and enhance relaxation. By targeting specific areas of tension and stress, Hana’s skilled therapists help clients achieve a state of deep physical and mental rejuvenation, contributing to a holistic approach to health and wellness.

04. Hana Treatment
Infared Saunas

While traditional saunas elevate the air temperature to high levels, infrared saunas heat the body directly, with only about 20 percent of the heat warming the air. Instead, infrared waves penetrate deeply into the body, promoting deep heating that activates sweat glands and facilitates toxin elimination.

Post-sweat, clients can enjoy showers with filtered water—a crucial step post-sauna—and conclude their spa ritual with premium beauty collections and luxury towels.

Hana Parnell also offers a dry bar — a new addition to the studio, giving clients the tools to freshen up post-treatment. And as found at Hana Grey Lynn, the new space will continue to showcase a highly curated selection of health, beauty, and ritual products to shop pre, or post treatment.

Hana’s new Parnell Wellness Space

What Sara Higgins has created in Hana Parnell is a sanctuary for calm amidst the busyness of modern life. Inspiring a moment of self-care and respite, this new wellness destination is the perfect antidote to daily stressors, harnessing the potent power of light, temperature, and touch to rejuvenate and restore.

Three excellent reasons to pay Bar Magda a visit this month

One of our favourite eateries in the city, Bar Magda, is known for its exceptional new-wave Filipino fare (Carlo Buenaventura, Matthew Venables, and their clever team never miss), but a perhaps lesser-known fact about the K-Road hotspot is that they know how to put on a damn good party. In celebration of three great years in business, during which time they’ve firmly established themselves as one of Auckland’s most-loved venues, Bar Magda is hosting a month-long celebration filled with exceptional events not to be missed.

Right: FOUNDER OF BAYSIDE RUM CO. & BAR MANAGER AT AHI, EGOR PETROV

01.

To kick things off, Buenaventura has invited one of the city’s top mixologists, Ahi’s bar manager and founder of Bayside Rum Co., Egor Petrov, to join himself and Venables on the 14th of June to host an evening of convivial cocktails, fantastic fare, and a rousing DJ set inspiring revellers to make a night of it. We have all of the details here.

GUEST CHEF FLOYD LYTTLE

02.

On June 21st, celebrate South Island flavours with a Filipino twist at Bar Magda’s *official* third birthday party. Guest chef Floyd Lyttle, renowned for his work at Michelin-starred restaurants and head chef of Christchurch’s lauded daytime bistro, Miro, joins Carlo to offer a four-course sharing feast, blending typically southern dishes with Southern Filipino flair. On the food front, Grey Lynn Butchers are supplying top quality cuts, while, when it comes to the drinks, a number of niche producers are showcasing the very best of the South Islands’ unique landscape — from Mineral & Bryterlater Wines to Great Little Vineyards & Rockferry Wines, Cahns Wines & Moko Hills, Unkel Wines, and the much-loved Brood Fermentation. Guests attending the dinner will also get a first taste of the new Bar Magda vintage. Tickets are $95 per person, and matching wines are $50 per person if purchased before the event, or $60 per person on the evening. In typical Magda fashion, a DJ will hit the decks from 10pm to get the (birthday) party started.

03.

As well as hosting these two epic events inspiring us to get out and about as winter rears its head, Bar Magda is also launching a hotly anticipated new menu, crafted to hero local producers, suppliers, and champion exceptional seasonal produce. Offering a more accessible take on the inventive fare Bar Magda has become known for, here you’ll find the likes of wild venison tartare with caramelised soy yogurt, preserved plum, and potato skin cracker, the ‘Magda Salad’ which we had the absolute pleasure of tasting last week (and can confirm it’s a must-try), featuring golden beets and persimmon with a delicious green goddess dressing and sweet lime citronette, and a Maja Blanca souffle with sweet corn and a caramelised coconut sherry sauce, alongside a host of exceptional new cocktails such as the Plum and Champagne Spritz, a heady Feijoa Sour, and a Saison rhubarb vermouth and grapefruit number that is perfectly tart and subtly sweet — the ideal drink to accompany the fantastic fare on offer.

Ken Fulk for The Rug Company

Warm up your space for the season ahead with Ken Fulk’s transcendent collection for The Rug Company

Lauded designer Ken Fulk is known for his whimsical, eclectic designs spanning homes, hotels, hospitality and highly coveted collaborations. His latest partnership — an exclusive collection for The Rug Company, has a tale to tell.

Ken Fulk’s work is instantly recognisable. Be it a contemporary hotel design, the opulent reimagining of a private jet, a celebrity home, or one of his famous, uproarious themed parties, or even, perhaps, a headdress inspired by Elizabeth Taylor, that he designed for a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show, Fulk’s calling cards remain consistently elaborate whatever the subject matter. Theatricality, modern whimsy, big, bold colours, a sense of old world elegance, and designs that tether to both the past and present are all ubiquitous in Fulk’s work, but when asked, he would tell you that the essence, no matter the context or content, is the story each design tells.

Nowhere is this more evident than in his new, debut collection for The Rug Company, within which the San Francisco-based designer looked to the ‘rituals of life’ for inspiration. Harnessing the enduring power of storytelling, Fulk imagined a six-strong series of transcendent rugs with nods to art, music, nature and reflection. The collaboration with Fulk was an obvious one for The Rug Company, considering the emphasis the business places on not only outstanding quality and craftsmanship, but celebrating uniqueness and creativity. With a shared reverence for ritual and sacred geometries, the decision to craft each piece around a distinct, ancient method of storytelling came quickly at the collaboration’s inception, and from there, ideas flowed freely and the partnership was synergistic.

Surrealist Garden by Ken Fulk for The Rug Company from Design Central

The stunning Surrealist Garden rug, inspired by traditional folklore tapestries, boasts an enchanting scene of silk hues woven into the intricacies of the characters against wool, while the Sonic Wave rug draws inspiration from soundwaves, evident in the organic ribbon motif rendered in a tranquil teal hue set against a neutral backdrop, and the illustrative Saint Joes Dome rug transposes the historic San Francisco church architecture that Fulk famously shaped into a creative hub. What’s evident across the collection is Fulk’s unique penchant for giving ideas form, weaving together his interest in ritual, storytelling, and natural geometry to expand the visual narrative of its new home.

The Rug Company is available locally at Design Central.

Traditional banh mi and Coconut Matcha Cloud

Have you heard? Phin is the new Vietnamese coffee and banh mi spot at City Works Depot

“The captivating scents of coffee brewing and the zestful taste of street food dominated our early life,” co-founder Sam Doan tells me of the eatery he co-founded with his sister Tira, Phin — a casual new spot within the vibrant City Works Depot specialising in Vietnamese coffee and banh mi. “Growing up in Hanoi, we came to value the process of coffee making and the importance of sharing meals at an early age, fostering a strong love of Vietnamese food and coffee which became an integral part of who we are.”

At Phin, the offering is simple but delicious, focused on two cornerstones of Vietnam’s vibrant culinary scene, with a concise edit of traditional sandwiches and an extensive drinks list bringing something novel to Auckland’s dining landscape.

Left: Traditional banh mi and Coconut Iced Coffee

Founded by a brother and sister duo who grew up in the vibrant city of Hanoi, Phin was conceived to bring a taste of Vietnam to Auckland’s culinary scene and inspire Kiwis to share in Vietnam’s authentic street food culture and unique coffee-drinking habits. “Coffee for us is not just a drink – it is part of our life,” Doan tells me, “From early morning rushes at sidewalk coffee stands to leisurely afternoons on cosy patios, the coffee and street food culture in Vietnam holds a special place in day-to-day life that brings joy and connection,” he continues, “Our aim [with Phin] is to replicate this unique and cherished tradition, introducing the richness of flavours and customs that make Vietnamese coffee so special.”

Left to right: Egg Coffee, Brown (Iced), Coconut Matcha Cloud and Coconut Iced Coffee

A ‘Phin’ is a traditional Vietnamese metal brewing tin used in extracting Robusta coffee grounds; a method that has become a symbol of Vietnam’s coffee culture, and we can confirm that the coffee offering is as authentic as it comes. With a menu that goes well beyond the classics, here you’ll find ‘Coco Ice Cream Coffee’ — an iced, coconut blend coffee that is subtly sweet and tastes like a milkshake, plus traditional ‘Egg Coffee’ (a speciality in Hanoi which combines strong Vietnamese coffee with a whipped egg yolk custard mixture to create a rich, velvety coffee with a sweet and frothy top), and a ‘Coconut Matcha Cloud’ which is like a creamy coconut water that is equal parts refreshing and indulgent, served alongside espresso and typically Vietnamese coffee served with condensed milk. There’s also ‘Yogurt Blend’ drinks that we’re yet to try, but sounds divine, and a whole section dedicated to brown sugar milk boba, plus a range of hot teas.

Traditional banh mi

On the food front, the menu is concise — focused on doing the classics incredibly well. The traditional bahn mi is served with the choice of regular (featuring all of the typical trimmings, from Vietnamese cold cuts to pâté, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, coriander, and a dash of chilli sauce), grilled pork, charsiu pork, teriyaki chicken, or tofu, with the option to swap out the fresh bread roll for sticky rice.

The space itself is laid back with an obvious Vietnamese influence, with woven bags and fans lining one wall, traditional coffee pour-overs (Phins) sitting pride of place, Vietnamese newspapers on display, and plenty of cosy corners to settle in for a delicious meal or tasty coffee and moment to yourself. “The ambience at Phin is crafted to foster a sense of community and cultural exchange,” Doan tells me, “Whether you’re stopping by for a quick coffee, meeting friends for lunch, or simply looking for a cosy spot to unwind, Phin promises a great experience.”

Left: Phin’s banh mi with Brown (Iced) and Egg Coffee

“Phin is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a celebration of Vietnamese culture and a testament to our passion for sharing our heritage with others,” says Doan. “We believe that food and drink can bring people together,” he continues, “Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast, food lover, or simply looking for a cosy place to relax, Phin offers a unique and authentic taste of Vietnam in the heart of Auckland.”

Serving traditional Vietnamese with a few tasty twists, Phin is a very welcome addition to the local food scene, and well worthy of your attention come lunchtime.
