Planning a trip to Fiji? Karen Walker shares with us the best places to stay & everything to pack

There is a reason why New Zealanders have long chosen Fiji as their family escape of choice. Beyond the incredible natural beauty and gorgeous weather of this island nation, its fascinating culture and wonderfully welcoming people are really what has us returning time and time again, each trip a chance to create lasting memories.

This has long been the case for renowned fashion designer, Karen Walker, who first visited Fiji when she was four years old, and counts it as a cherished destination of her childhood. She has since returned over 20 times as an adult, and as such, has become something of an expert in where to go, what to see and (crucially) the perfect things to pack.

Given that Walker recently returned from her latest trip, with husband Mikhail and daughter Valentina in tow, we called on her knowledge to deliver an insider’s guide on everything to consider when planning a trip to Fiji — essential for anyone thinking about making this tropical pilgrimage themselves.

How to get there

One of the biggest drawcards of Fiji for New Zealanders (particularly those with young families) is the ease of travelling there. There are over 20 flights from New Zealand to Fiji every week, with flights taking around three hours and crucially, no time difference to adjust to when you arrive. In fact, you can leave New Zealand in the afternoon and land in Fiji just in time for cocktail hour, set against an exquisite sunset over one of Fiji’s coral atolls.

If you opt to fly Fiji Airways, expect a delectable in-flight service, created by award-winning Kiwi-Fijian chef, Richard Cross, who designed the on-board menu using local ingredients in innovative ways. (Think cinnamon ice cream, Kava and more.)

Once you have landed in Fiji, the process of getting to your resort usually means more than just a simple taxi ride. If you are staying on one of Fiji’s 333 islands, getting to your final destination could mean either a helicopter or seaplane fight or a speedboat ride, all of which allow you to soak in the stunning beauty of your surrounds before disembarking on the doorstep of your resort to be immediately immersed in a traditional Fijian welcome.

As Walker says, “Arriving in Fiji and hearing Bula Maleya (the Fijian welcome song) sung and smelling the syrupy sweetness of white frangipani is one of the best feelings I know.”

Where to stay

On her most recent trip, Walker revisited a favourite island — the Dolphin Island Resort — on which she had three new experiences: The Wakaya Club & Spa, Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa and Six Senses Fiji.

On this private island, the sleek, luxury accommodation is run by a matronly resort manager, Dawn, who is famous for her hospitality that wraps guests in love and laughter, and has long made this resort one of the most special and memorable you are likely to experience. As Walker explains, it’s the reason she keeps going back. Only able to accommodate a maximum of eight guests, Dolphin Island feels more like being in a lovely home than a resort, and will feel like coming home every time you visit.

Wakaya Club and Spa

Discover another luxurious hideaway at Wakaya Club and Spa, set on a picture-perfect private island paradise and offering accommodation for only 28 guests at a time. Boasting a beautiful, golden-sand beach (right on the doorstep of your bure), incredible snorkelling (thanks to the rich coral reef surrounding the resort) and a spectacularly lush garden from which food is harvested and which can be enjoyed by guests, the resort is truly second to none. As Walker says “[this is] without a doubt the best example of a lush, tropical environment that I’ve ever seen in Fiji”.

Set on the sheltered western side of Viti Levu, the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa offers a tranquil escape on the main Denarau Island in Nadi — which makes it one of the easiest places to get to once you leave the airport. The Waitui Beach Club offers adults-only luxury like nowhere else, with lagoon-style infinity pools, a swim-up bar and cabanas galore. But beyond all of that, the Sofitel really leans into its French heritage by offering a gastronomic experience unlike anywhere else in Fiji. Offering stunning experiences such as barefoot dining in the sand, sipping house-infused rum on the Suka Bar swings, taking a walk through the on-site herb and vegetable gardens, or immersing yourself in the Fijian Night at Bazaar Kitchen & Bar, the resort is a foodie destination not to be missed.

Six Senses Fiji

Operating with health, wellbeing and sustainability at its heart, Six Senses Fiji is a calm, luxurious escape that offers an incredible spa and astonishing villas but that also places a strong emphasis on caring for the natural environment. In fact, Six Senses Fiji is home to 39 Fijian crested iguanas, a critically endangered species with less than 5,000 remaining in the world. Karen, Mikhail and Valentina enjoyed a double villa, which offered over 300 square meters of space and not one, but two, private pools. 

“Bad lighting is a pet peeve when I travel,” Karen explains, “so I especially loved the care given to the interior and the lighting at Six Senses Fiji and to know it was designed by Kiwi architect Richard Priest is even better.” She adds, “and having dozens of critically endangered Fijian crested iguanas in the rainforest near our villa was pretty darn special too.”

What to pack

In Fiji, make the most of barefoot luxury and the casual, laid-back vibe with a suitcase full of easy, breezy pieces that keep comfort front of mind. Here, Karen Walker delivers her top tips, as a seasoned Fiji holiday-goer.

Pack light — at a lot of resorts, laundry is generally included or at a small cost, so it’s really easy to re-wear your favourite holiday outfits! 

Don’t overcomplicate it — Most resorts also have all the gear for activities like yoga, snorkelling, water sports and even quite often have an excellent library consisting of many of the greatest Penguin Classics so that’s half a suitcase freed up right there. My favourite holiday reads right now are Let Me Tell You What I Mean by Joan Didion and Busy Being Free by Emma Forrest.

Multiple pairs of shades, Karen Walker ones (obviously) and a spare pair of spectacles in case of any accidents. Some of my favourite shades right now are the Blow Wave Two Torts (for a classic mood), the Wavy Ultra Two Torts (for a bit more fun) and the True North Wave Sundown Triple (for a LOT more fun).

Don’t forget sun protection — I never travel in summer or to the tropics without a big hat, a paper parasol (which you can get from Wah Lee in Albert Street) and of course, my preferred sunblock, Osmosis’ Protect.

Lots of sandals — my favourites right now are the Birkenstock Arizona EVA’s, or I’m loving the Nomadic State of Mind styles for summer right now.

Meet Bossi, Auckland’s newest inner-city Italian restaurant

On the ground floor of Auckland’s downtown residential skyscraper, The Pacifica, sits a new Italian restaurant Bossi. Simply step off the bustling sidewalk into its inviting space, and you’ll be instantly transported to a restaurant in Rome, as you take in the sophisticated surroundings, from luscious velvet furnishings to a sleek, curved marble-top bar. In fact, the space is as fitting for an intimate date as it is for an outing with family, lunch with colleagues or a spirited gathering with friends. After all, Italian cuisine is fit for the whole family, and owner Jenna Carter intends Bossi to be a welcoming experience. 

Carter had a strong vision for Bossi from the outset. She wants guests to feel like they’ve entered her home for a delicious meal — one that is reminiscent of her experience growing up within a tight-knit Italian community in Melbourne, and time spent with her late Nonna, whose portrait is proudly displayed on Bossi’s wall. 

“Opening a space like Bossi has been a dream of mine for years. Born out of pure passion and fond memories cooking with my Nonna, this is an ode to her and her legacy. I’m delighted to finally welcome Aucklanders and visitors alike to enjoy the many dishes my family has grown up with for decades”, says Carter.

Complementing Carter’s nearby Italian deli Deli di Bossi, the Bossi restaurant offers an elevated take on contemporary Italian cuisine. Headed by Executive Chef Shaun Dowling, the passionate kitchen team all have Italian ties in some way or another, and we can firmly say their handmade pasta is nothing short of exceptional. The menu features crowd-pleasers like polenta with mushroom ragu and raviolo filled with egg yolk, the latter a divine and saucy creation cooked to perfection. Dowling’s house-made limoncello is also featured on the cocktail menu and infused into creamy gelato (trust us when we say, you will savour every spoonful). As Dowling puts it, the team have spent months curating Italian dishes that are “synonymous with luxury, without losing their timeless charm”.

At Bossi, you may find yourself in an alluring booth, at a table, seated in the upstairs mezzanine (which can also be booked for large gatherings), or in the private dining space (which seats 10). The cherry on top is perhaps the inspired rendition of Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’, masterfully painted by mural artist Ross Lewis. And as you revel in Bossi’s elegant setting, if you look hard enough, you may discover other Renaissance-style surprises, like the golden cherubs tucked behind the bathroom doors.

Your first look at Underground Bistro, the new seafood-centric restaurant & bar in St Kevin’s Arcade

A charming new restaurant and wine bar has opened in Karangahape Road’s St Kevin’s Arcade, and it feels like a natural evolution for co-owners Adam Purcell and Lindon Wahrlich, as they build on their already-prolific presence in this iconic building. Having spent the last three years running Junktion (selling film cameras and vintage goods), Norwegian Wood (a mid-century modern furniture store) and Underground (a multi-use basement space), the duo has created what is poised to be the perfect place for those in the community to come together over delicious fare and refreshing drinks — and we have your first look.

A tiny but undeniably charming venue (once home to Acho’s), Underground Bistro is located in Shop 11 in St Kevin’s Arcade (directly next to Norwegian Wood and just across from Lowbrow). The space itself is pocket-sized, only allowing for between four and seven people to sit inside (depending on the configuration of the evening) although generous bar leaners spill out into the arcade, allowing for larger groups to mingle or for anyone to pull up a perch. In short, it’s clear that the owners haven’t let themselves be limited by size. Aesthetically, Underground Bistro is a loose continuation of the ‘bunker’ theme seen in downstairs’ Underground, with much of the fit-out created from items that have been found and collected over the years, including marble-topped tables that date back to the 20s and lampshades reminiscent of the 50s. It’s an eclectic space that offers all the character needed to thrive in this corner of town and feels like the missing piece of the Arcade’s puzzle.

From the kitchen, the intention is for food to be fuss-free, uncomplicated and delicious — with an ever-changing, pescatarian-friendly menu designed to incorporate the freshest ingredients. Here, a variety of seafood is the hero, where you’ll find dishes like a home-style risotto (which we’re told is a stand-out), freshly shucked oysters, and scampi grilled in its shell for an utterly rich flavour. “If it pays its way and people enjoy the food, that’s the dream,” Wahrlich tells me.

From the bar, expect to find Purcell, or one of his friends who works at the neighbouring stores, to be serving up natural wines, Cassels beer, and a complete menu of tasty spritzes. The perfect selection to quench any pre- or post-dinner thirst.

While originally intended as the sister venue to Underground, this new bistro is fast making its own, distinctive mark. And, if the pre-opening parties it has thrown over the last couple of weeks is any indication, Underground Bistro is already building a loyal following. Our advice? Get down to discover its wonder before everyone else finds out.

Here’s why Cassina’s iconic Cab Chair is the seat every dining table needs

Meet the organisation providing welfare to our brave firefighters and their families

Always the first to respond to emergencies and often confronted with tragic situations as a result, the brave men and women who work as our firefighters deserve so much more than what they currently get for their lifesaving efforts. This idea is the core ethos of the New Zealand Firefighters Welfare Society, an organisation run by firefighters to look after crews and their families, and a cause that we think is worthy of our philanthropic efforts this season.

The background
In the mid-1980s, a core team of firefighters realised the need for support in their industry, and being a courageous collective, they decided to do something about it themselves. Pooled together, they knew their resources would be able to support one another in times of need. As a practical step to help their fellow firefighters through tough times, they placed a biscuit tin at the centre of their station table and started adding money to it. Soon, this idea spread across the country, and eventually, the NZ Firefighters Welfare Society was born. Over time, this grew to include a dedicated healthcare plan for firefighters and their families in the form of a fund, Healthcare99.

Who Are They
Four decades since its inception, the NZ Firefighters Welfare Society remains steadfast in its ethos — firefighters helping firefighters and their families. With a board of representatives from up and down the country (all active or retired firefighters) and five regional welfare managers, it remains a grassroots, not-for-profit that ensures its efforts are delivered to those who need it most.

What They Do
Firefighters and their families can take advantage of abundant support for a small weekly membership commitment. Alongside welfare assistance (including injury and hospital assistance, loans and grants, and further support such as childbirth and adoption, counselling and disaster funds), members also receive discounts at many essential daily businesses. These include insurance providers, mechanics and large appliance retailers, fast-tracked connections to external support networks and access to society-owned holiday homes for the break they absolutely deserve. Given that the Society has been built by those who know the industry intimately, it has honed in on providing the support that is targeted and strategic, and makes a significant and measurable impact.

How To Get Involved
The NZ Firefighters Welfare Society relies hugely on philanthropic support. Financial donations are always welcome if you have the capacity to contribute. Word of mouth is also tremendously important to their efforts, as membership contributions support other members in their times of need, too.

This dish is a must-order if you’re looking to begin on a high note. The prawns, smothered in n’duja butter, come with fresh, house-baked Parker House rolls, which are so soft and fluffy — perfect for mopping up the prawn juices and butter.

We tend to think that few dishes are a better precursor to a steak dinner than fresh fish, and this tuna crudo is the perfect appetiser. The tuna itself is so fresh and, paired with heirloom tomato and radish, it feels somewhat virtuous too.

As much of a crowd-pleaser as steak itself, making for a lighter summer alternative too, the chefs at JSH thought it was high time they introduced a chicken schnitzel to their menu. This one is finished with a creamy and tart whipped feta, with shaved zucchini and fresh peas to add a touch of light, seasonal greens. Finished with dill, it’s schnitzel like you’ve never tried it before.

JSH isn’t initially associated with fanciful vegetarian fare, but this delicious gnocchi promises to change even the most devout carnivore’s mind. In this iteration, gnocchi is lightly fried for a crispier texture before being topped with confit mushrooms (with garlic, thyme, lemon and fennel seeds). Then grilled for a smoky charred flavour, it is complete on an umami-driven mushroom puree and an astringent and punchy parsley pistou.

We could sing this menu’s praises all day long, but when it comes to food like this, you really need to experience it firsthand. (And for those with an affinity for a classic take, JSH still offers their usual signature cuts and classic sides too.)

Sober curious? NZ’s first alcohol-free bottle shop has opened in Ponsonby

As the ‘sober curious’ movement shows little sign of slowing, with more and more people embracing sobriety (or simply limiting their alcohol intake), the need for a permanent space that caters to this persuasion has become evident. And after the sell-out success of its Ponsonby pop-up back in July, AF has, today, made history by opening the doors to the country’s first-ever 100% alcohol-free bottle shop.

At The Curious AF Bottle Shop, shoppers have the opportunity to try and buy an array of delicious drinks from a number of brands, including Curious AF’s own range, from its classic g&t to refreshing spritzes. The AF cocktails have been formulated to replicate the taste of alcohol and harness the power of ‘Afterglow’, a natural heat extract that produces a gentle warming feeling, essentially mimicking the taste and sensation of the real thing. Alongside the AF range, sourced especially for the shop opening, sit some of the most coveted labels in the sober alcohol-free movement, including such as alcohol-free aperitif Ghia, Vandestreek IPA, Noughty Sparkling Rose and Bella Hadid’s famed range Kin Euphorics. To keep things curious and exciting, AF will regularly change up the selection of alcohol-free drinks available in the shop.

Founder Lisa King, of Eat My Lunch fame, explains that the overwhelming success of AF Drinks’ July pop-up ensured the concept’s longevity. “Across just a few short weeks, some 2000 people walked through our beautiful art gallery-inspired installation to discover what the Curious AF movement had to offer,” she says. “And it didn’t disappoint. In the first few weeks, we sold out of many product lines and received an overwhelming number of requests to make the pop-up permanent.” Four months later, this vision has now been realised.

Off the back of Dry July, Sober October, and a slightly more ambitious No Beers November (in support of Movember), it is fair to say that many of us are looking for something that quenches the thirst without relying on the social crutch that is alcohol. As such, The Curious AF Bottle Shop’s new Crummer Road address, designed by Wonder Group, is anticipated to become a go-to spot for any alcohol-free hosting necessities too, including specialty ice moulds, garnishes, glassware and accessories.

Through extending the notion of ‘sober curiosity’, The Curious AF Bottle Shop space is just as much about the experience, as it is about the products it offers. “It’s very much a hands-on, glasses-at-the-ready experience,” King shares. “We also want to host a series of unique AF events in the space.”

Offering a break from booze in the best way, this new bottle-o is set to become a firm favourite ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Immerse yourself in Molteni&C at this one-of-a-kind, luxury apartment by Dawson & Co

Anyone who has a piece from Molteni&C in their home will know the beguiling beauty of this brand. Having had the exceptional creative mind of Vincent Van Duysen at its helm for six years now (the brand itself began in the 1930s), Molteni&C produces distinctly sleek and sophisticated collections.

Beyond its design prowess alone, however, it is the quality and craftsmanship of Molteni&C that has cemented its standing as a brand worth investing in. “When one of our clients introduced us to a private project which included an empty apartment with plenty of potential, we proposed a unique collaboration,” Scott Fisk of Dawson & Co. tells me. “The Molteni&C/Dada apartment is a private residence — part showcase, part accommodation — available for use overnight by invitation only and designed to give potential Molteni&C clients the rare opportunity to sleep, eat and live a Molteni&C life.” Indeed, those lucky enough to experience this new residential concept in person will be able to interact with Molteni&C collections that cannot be seen anywhere else in New Zealand, and gain insight into how certain pieces might be incorporated into their own homes. 

Tucked away in one of Auckland’s leafy suburbs and surrounded by hospitality establishments, retail shops and private homes, the Molteni&C/Dada apartment’s unassuming exterior belies the beauty that unfolds beyond the threshold. A perfectly-appointed living and dining space is anchored by a Dada kitchen with a long, travertine bench-top and V-Zug appliances (including a refrigerator stocked with Champagne, wine, cheese, charcuterie and other essentials), while the main bedroom contains an awe-inspiring Gliss Master Wardrobe (a Van Duysen design that is quite possibly the most perfect wardrobe we have ever seen). The rest of the apartment is filled with a range of furniture from Molteni&C collections, where modern pieces stand alongside classics, including some that were originally designed more than 50 years ago by the likes of Gio Ponti, Tobia Scarpa and Yasuhiko Itoh — proving the inherently timeless nature of this heritage brand. 

With no detail left unchecked (everything from the tiles to the tapware was conceived by the Molteni&C team in Italy), this apartment is truly a spectacular expression of the brand it showcases, putting into practice the precision and perfection that has long made Molteni&C one of the world’s most sought-after names in design.

Having just opened its doors officially, new waterfront bar and brasserie Bivacco Bar and Grill has fast become the place to be. Set in the iconic Viaduct Harbour spot that used to house Headquarters, this exceptional new hospitality destination is offering the kind of experience that one might compare to the likes of Balthazar in New York or Totti’s in Sydney — such is its scale.

As much a place for long, indulgent lunches of flavourful Italian fare as it is for a late-afternoon drink, Bivacco is quickly establishing itself as one of the best places to head to when the work day is done — mostly because of its dedicated aperitivo hour. From 4pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday, Bivacco welcomes punters to watch the sun go down over the sparkling waters of Viaduct Harbour, as they delight in an array of champagne, cocktail, and Peroni specials, accompanied by complimentary bites.

Of course, Bivacco’s antipasti menu is extensive and delicious, where dishes like burrata with black garlic, courgette, mint and asparagus and raw white asparagus, drizzled with aged balsamic and thyme and finished with parmesan, meet the likes of fried mozzarella sticks with caviar, and delicate beef carpaccio with truffle, wild garlic, pickled mushroom and ricotta salata. On the main menu, a number of tasty pizza and pasta dishes sit alongside meats that have been cooked to perfection on an open flame, as well as an array of satiating sides and one of the best tiramisu dishes we have ever tried.

Having opened just in time for the summer season, Bivacco is one of the best places in the City at which to make the most of the long, warm nights and beautiful sunsets that will become more and more frequent in the coming weeks — after all, you won’t get much better than this spot for views, food and drinks.

Comvita teams up with international designer Claudia Li in a new, fashion-forward collaboration

Last year, beloved Manuka honey brand Comvita joined forces with celebrated New Zealand fashion designer Claudia Li (known for dressing the likes of Michelle Obama, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid). As part of her Fall 2022 show at New York Fashion Week last year (for which Comvita was the main sponsor), Li created a series of fashion-forward ‘Honey Bags’ made from the same paracords featured in her ready-to-wear, that were designed specifically to carry Comvita’s iconic jars of Manuka honey.

The collaboration was a successful meeting of minds, with both Comvita and Claudia Li connecting over their shared belief in the importance of heritage. After all, Comvita has been taking its premium-quality honey to the world since 1974 and continues to build on that rich history with spectacular products that put the wonders of pure New Zealand Manuka honey on a global scale. In a way, Li is on a similar path. Her eponymous label is not only a testament to her talent, but is a way for her to explore and express her own heritage, and share that with the international fashion community.

Now, the two brands are taking their partnership a step further, with Comvita unveiling a raft of new packaging in a custom print that was inspired by the beautiful pieces Li created for her aforementioned collection. Here, the designer developed a unique pattern that picked up on elements from Fall 2022, but brought something different to the table — resulting in a more sophisticated, modern twist on the classic floral motif.

Alongside the new packaging, Li also created beekeeper suits for Comvita, taking what are typically functional pieces and imbuing them with style and character (and creating the potential for more self-expression in the workplace).

An innovative collaboration and one that we didn’t know we needed in our lives (but certainly do), Comvita x Claudia Li is proving to be a creatively fruitful and interesting partnership, that puts both brands in a bold new light. We can’t wait to see what they do next.

The wondrous world of Gucci is put on show as the brand’s immersive exhibition lands in Sydney

In 2021, Gucci opened a multi-sensory, retrospective exhibition in Florence to celebrate 100 years since its founding. The spectacular show, ‘Gucci Garden Archetypes’, paid homage not only to the lauded Italian brand’s history, but to the incredible tenure of its current Creative Director, Alessandro Michele. Now, having made its way through Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul, the exhibition has landed in Sydney — giving us the perfect excuse to skip across the ditch. 

Taking over the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, Gucci Garden Archetypes comprises a series of distinct, immersive spaces designed by Achivio Personale that feature cutting-edge technology, elaborate hand-crafting and innovative interior design to speak to different aspects of Gucci’s heritage. And, to delve in to the various campaigns that its lauded Creative Director has conceived for the brand since the start of his tenure.

From the exhibition’s entranceway (swathed in a distinct tone of Gucci pink) visitors enter through a multi-media room lined with screens that play all of Michele’s campaigns at once — an immersive ode to the way in which the creative director has shaped Gucci’s visual identity (and perhaps also, to the way in which his creative vision typically brings Gucci’s multi-faceted heritage into sharp focus, and grounds it firmly in the now). From there, the various spaces see visitors move from a floral, olfactory haven to a room finished in floor-to-ceiling mirrors and filled with shelves of soft toys, vintage Crocker and Gucci bags and a wall of cuckoo clocks (Michele has a fascination with collecting things — so much so he has basically turned it into a kind of eclectic art form), to a room recreated as a Milanese subway (complete with a very realistic mannequin).

Gucci Garden Archetypes is a carefully-curated, meticulously detailed look inside the mind of Michele — an iconoclastic designer who has transformed the house of Gucci since he took its creative reigns. If you find yourself in Sydney over the coming months, this fascinating exhibition is well-worth a visit.

An impressive collection of contemporary art sits at the heart of this exquisite Melbourne home

Tucked away in Melbourne’s leafy and opulent Toorak, Taylor Pressly Architects’ Curatorial House is a living showcase of what happens when art meets life. Here, the concept of curation has been applied thoroughly, where an interplay between architecture, design and art fulfils a brief that demands that these aspects be balanced. The result is a home that feels creative, unique and deeply personal.

Calling on local art gallery Otomys to provide a bespoke and complete curatorial service, the clients wanted more than just the architecture of their residence to speak to their creative flair and adventurous spirit. As such, the home has ended up with more than 60 artworks from 27 artists and gallerists across 15 cities, with the Otomys team taking charge of everything from procurement to installation. “Our aim is to ease the boundaries between art and interiors,” reflects Megan Dicks, co-director of Otomys. “Curatorial House expresses our belief that art is a necessity, not a luxury.”

But it’s not just the cultivation of a collection that embodies the idea of ‘art’ here. At this address, function itself is used as art too. The effect of light, for instance, which filters through the open windows from the trees above, has been cleverly maximised, even as the day begins to dim. Similarly, a range of sleek light fixtures have been introduced to not only highlight the home’s design but to create the kind of depth required to make the spaces feel interesting and dynamic. Take the vast entrance foyer, for example. In its impressive, three-storey void hangs an arresting light sculpture — delicate in nature, but grand in scale and offering a hint at what to expect from the house that lies beyond.

Armed with a creative brief and the understanding that few ideas were off limits, the architects were able to conceive a home that could capture the spirit of its clients via clever material layering, cavernous voids, light-flooded outlooks and a palette that is the perfect canvas for artistic interior touches. Think darker-toned marble counter-tops and neutral-coloured concrete on ceilings, cabinetry and walls, both elements against which brass accents were made to stand out unapologetically. These impeccable material details promise to ignite the more bold aspects of the build (from the sculptural lighting to the awe-inspiring art) and cultivate a contemporary vibe without feeling too ‘on-trend.’

In all its grandeur, Curatorial House was designed with hosting in mind, and the architecture lends itself to that. In the home, communal spaces are bountiful, with three dining areas that each evoke a different story. The formal dining room boasts lofty ceilings and elongated tables, whereas the kitchen’s breakfast nook has been designed with intimate family meals in mind. For a more casual lunch, an al fresco dining space on the rooftop offers spectacular, sweeping views over Melbourne.

While the main focus in this home is the art on the walls, appreciation should be shown for how artistically the architecture has been applied too. One cannot help but be drawn back to the rooftop, where a glass atrium and generous pool interact through a play of light that feels almost like a dynamic piece of art in and of itself. It’s spaces like these that prove that while some homes simply display art, others embody it.
