Albany has just welcomed a new cafe, serving the ultimate brunch fare

From the same owner of Scout, Woolfy’s and Newbie, Fields Café has opened its doors on the North Shore, where Roger Liu has taken his hospo game to the next level. From a much larger space to a more elaborate and creative menu compared to his previous cafes, Fields has already become a bustling spot for Albany locals and is only planning on growing further when the apartment complex that neighbours the café is ready to welcome residents. 

Located in a developing neighbourhood surrounded by construction sites, it’s impossible to miss the modern and sleek white building designed by Young + Richard’s, which also home to a children’s playground and outdoor deck. Fields’ interiors were designed by Material Creative who were also the ones behind Liu’s previous cafés and have formed a signature style and cohesiveness from working together over the years.

Inside, you’ll find a wide and open space that seats 110 customers while welcoming in the natural light effortlessly. The tables are arranged for the café to feel spacious and for those that are seeking more privacy, there’s a private room for board meetings and events, located at the back of the cafe. Although the stellar design is undeniably eye-catching, just like Liu’s previous cafés, it’s the cabinet of treats, such as lamingtons, cakes and muffins, followed by savoury takeaway meals that first catch your attention, particularly the dragon’s egg-shaped passionfruit cheesecake with a coconut cake base. 

On the menu, there’s a variety of dishes that range from the nourishing to the naughty, such as the summer bowl, which comprises of wild rice, diced kumara, turmeric-seasoned pickled cauliflower, quinoa, radishes and a poached egg in a bowl that has been lined with tart beetroot yoghurt. Then there are the corn croquettes that have been drizzled with a decadent honey mustard mayo that enrichens the creaminess of the deep-fried croquette’s fillings.

However, it was the Waitaha wagyu beef burger that stole the show for us. Created by the head chef, Logan Wang, this burger features a thick and creamy sauce with a complexity of tanginess and decadence, made from his own secret recipe which he refrains from sharing. The brioche buns are smeared with sweet and salty bacon jam and the juicy wagyu beef patty is topped with melted gouda cheese and finished with a side of golden, crispy fries. Luckily, Fields is a licensed café, meaning that the glorious pairing of a cold pint of crisp beer with delicious deep-fried fare is an absolute possibility at this spot.

Calling out to all sweet tooths, Fields might just be the newest and strongest contenders for serving Auckland’s best pancakes as the matcha hotcake was seriously tasty. Boasting an unbelievably fluffy texture, combined with the subtle earthy notes of green tea which were enhanced by the chocolate crumb. The hotcake was paired with fresh berries, caramelised almonds, sweet strawberry coulis and topped with a bittersweet and aromatic sesame ice cream which only made the matcha flavours shine even brighter. 

With the aim to recreate brunch classics with a contemporary twist, chef Wang even played around with the morning staple eggs Benedict by swapping out the English muffins for a Japanese pancake, otherwise known as okonomiyaki and your choice of side, from salmon, bacon to miso-glazed eggplant. The diverse menu makes Fields a café that anybody can enjoy and the spacious fit-out makes it the perfect spot for a long catch-up with friends. Meanwhile, the impressive cabinet and Kokako coffee, brewed by professionally-skilled baristas also makes for a great eatery for a fast and easy takeaway.

For anyone still holding to the notion of the espresso martini as ‘out-dated’, we suggest you update its classification under ‘timeless staple’. It’s beyond question that it’s a drink to savour when your energy needs a reboot on a long night out, and it’s an undeniably delicious one. Recently, our Editor-in-chief modified her previous mutual stance on the cocktail, sharing that the frozen espresso martini she’d enjoyed in Sydney was one of the taste highlights of her holiday. So we decided to recreate it, in our own mini-bar.

Ingredients
– 1 cup of quality brewed espresso, chilled
– 1 cup of vanilla-flavoured vodka
– ⅔ cup of Kahlua
– ⅓ cup of Tia Maria
– Approximately 30 regular-sized ice cubes
– Pinch of cinnamon

Method
1)
In a high-power blender, add all the ingredients in the same order as listed above. 
2) The quantity of ice might initially seem excessive but the consistency needs to be the same as a slushy.
3) Just continue blending until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

Denizen’s Editor-in-Chief spends a weekend with the sleek Rolls-Royce Dawn

“What are you doing in that?” yelled my next-door neighbour,  “Yes, it has been a very good year,” I nod, as I pull into my quiet Herne Bay street. As I park the Rolls-Royce Dawn outside my home, I immediately hear my children squealing with the sort of delight one would expect upon winning Lotto. A dead giveaway to the neighbour that the Dawn’s existence on our street would be short-lived. Oh well, might as well enjoy the farce.

The world looks very different from behind the wheel of the Dawn. It’s a vast, beautiful motorcar bursting with luxuries that are more akin to a penthouse suite in a luxury hotel. From the organ-pull vent controls, clarinet-key window switches and the wooden-handled umbrellas hidden inside the doors, to the four lavishly soft leather armchairs with built-in massage capabilities, it’s truly a delightful place to be. 

Blessed with a rare blue-sky weekend, my humble family of four took it upon ourselves to put the Dawn through the demands of family life. First stop was Sugar at Chelsea Bay. Heading over the Harbour Bridge we kept the roof up and noted that there really was no wind noise at all. A common complaint in lessor convertible vehicles, I’m sure.

Deciding to embrace the sunshine, the push of a button saw the fine fabric of the Dawn’s roof fall with eerie, near-silent precision in less than 22 seconds. Meaning that should the clouds part temporarily, one can drop the top at the traffic lights without so much as misplacing a hair. With the top folded down, the inside of this splendid car becomes exposed to the outside world, and what was private, suddenly becomes public domain. All eyes are on you.

Upon parking the carriage doors swing wide open offering onlookers the glimpse of leather and veneer -that’s like a flash of celebrity skin on the red carpet. I instruct my children to act regal as they disembark, but it would seem that’s too much to ask.

There’s no denying the prestige that comes with the Rolls-Royce marque, it is the undefeated king of the jungle, the last bastion of success. But the funny realisation I had behind the wheel, is that while a Rolls-Royce may appreciate speed, it is never in a hurry. Rushing is for the underclass, after all. Reaching 100km/hr in 4.9 seconds, it does so in a stately manner, and while it’s capable of mind-boggling speeds (it reaches 250km/hr with sublime ease), that is not the reason you drive it. Though much like having a nuclear bomb in your arsenal, there’s security in knowing you have the capabilities should you need them.

And when you do choose to put the pedal to the metal, the sensation of momentum is closer to a private jet taking off, with a quietly-gathering
perfect storm of energy and fine upholstery. With the abundance of torque and the angels fluttering among the eight gears, the Dawn is ever ready and never hurried.

At a whopping 5.285 metres in length, the Dawn has serious presence, but here’s the thing: You don’t possess a car like this, it possesses you. Which can feel a little daunting at first, but the Dawn tries to be gentle, and by the end of the weekend, we had embraced each other’s temperaments. I had her back and she had mine, which was important in dealing with the disdain of other drivers.

That’s the thing about a car of this calibre, you spend a lot of time witnessing people trying to wrap their heads around such an audacious presence, particularly when there’s a woman behind the wheel. I noted on several occasions over the course of my weekend, the look of sheer disgust on the faces of some people (all women I might add). The sight of me behind the wheel, with two young children in the back seat no less, seemed to ignite rage in some members of my sex. One mother — whose sons were pointing with delight at the Dawn as we sat alongside each other at traffic lights — took it upon herself to mouth obscenities at me, shaking her head. I’m not going to place the blame on my new friend Dawn, she’s far too classy to be affected by such mediocrity. Instead, I’m going to buy a Dawn so I can instil some more rage and despair. It seems like the only reasonable thing to do. Life is short, buy the car!

The Ayrburn Domain development is set to change the face of Queenstown’s hospitality scene

There is no disputing the allure of Queenstown and its hinterland, with those endlessly breathtaking views and some of New Zealand’s most beautifully dramatic landscapes. Fortunately, most Auckland restaurants keep their doors open during Waitangi Day. This impressive facial treatment will combat the effects of summer’s overindulgence

We all go into our summer holiday with plans of achieving the wellbeing trifecta; rest, relaxation and restoration. And yet, the reality is often far from the case. After a hectic summer of wrangling small people at the beach, cooking and cleaning up endlessly for friends and family, and hitting the G&Ts at midday every day, one can feel less than revived. All of which can wreak havoc on our visage.

This harsh reality hit me when I applied my work warpaint for the first day back in the office. Staring back at me from the mirror was a dry, summer ravaged face in desperate need of some TLC. I needed help, stat. A quick fix to my woes. But where does one go? Thankfully, returning to the city to get my hands on another bottle of Augustinus Bader’s moisturizing cream was a very good start. I was introduced to the magic of this moisturiser by Melanie Grant, facialist to the stars (and myself when I’m in Sydney, where she is based), and I’ve been a dedicated devote to this face cream for well over a year.
