Each photograph is less a record than a restoration: mauri returned to creatures suspended behind glass, some of which no longer exist at all. The Biennale opens to the public on 9th May 2026, with the exhibition returning home to Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū from mid-2027.

Well, well, well. The first Monday in May is upon Well, well, well. The first Monday in May is upon us, and the Met steps are once again proving that nobody throws a fancy-dress party quite like Anna Wintour.

The brief is Costume Art, the dress code “Fashion Is Art,” and (bless them) the guest list is taking it personally. Co-chairs Beyoncé and Nicole Kidman set the tone, with Queen Bey making her grand return after a decade away. Rihanna swanned in last, as one does. Madonna arrived with a trumpet and a small entourage of the blindfolded. Heidi Klum committed to the bit so thoroughly she essentially became a Roman ruin. Katy Perry vanished behind a chrome mask. The Jenners did what the Jenners do. And Sabrina Carpenter turned up in a frock made of actual film strips, from Sabrina, naturally, which is the sort of cheeky on-the-nose moment we’re rather fond of.

The carpet is rolled, the doors have closed, and the rest of the evening unfolds behind them. We can only imagine.
