The waterfront favourite serving up a fresh reason to return

As Auckland begins to warm up, our attention is turning towards long lunches, afternoons in the sunshine and, preferably, somewhere with a view of the water. Few places cater to this particular agenda quite like First Mates, Last Laugh. Perched on the edge of Westhaven Marina, the much-loved waterfront restaurant has long been a favourite for its exceptional food, excellent drinks and enviable setting. And now, with a handful of enticing new dishes joining the menu, there’s even more reason to make a reservation.

The kitchen has never been short on creativity, and its latest additions are no exception. First up, the Panama fried chicken arrives generously coated in roasted rice and kaffir lime salt, accompanied by pickles and a spicy ketchup, while the tsukemono cucumber salad brings a refreshing contrast with coconut yoghurt, chilli oil, crispy shallots and mint. It’s the kind of vibrant, flavour-packed food that makes ordering a few plates for the table particularly appealing.

For those with a more substantial appetite, the impressive 500g T-bone, served with Café de Paris butter and roasted onion, is a compelling addition, while the tossed asparagus with cashew crema, spiced roasted cashews and sage makes a delicious accompaniment. And because a meal like this deserves a proper finale, there’s the wonderfully indulgent Strawberry Bomb with vanilla gelato, alongside refreshing strawberry rosé and passionfruit sorbets for something a little lighter.

Of course, part of the appeal of First Mates, Last Laugh has always been the experience beyond the plate. With the marina stretching out before you, the promise of sunshine and a menu that continues to deliver, it’s a particularly persuasive place to spend an afternoon. Gather a few friends, order generously and make the most of Auckland’s waterfront dining season. Summer is looking delicious already.
