Meet Point Chevalier’s new neighbourhood restaurant

There’s a new neighbourhood restaurant arriving in Point Chevalier, and we have a feeling it’s going to become a favourite. Wilko’s brings a fresh approach to local dining, combining exceptional food, a beautifully considered setting and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like a regular from your very first visit.

The vision of chef James Wilkinson and co-owner Gareth Weaver, Wilko’s takes inspiration from the traditional English supper house, where good food and long evenings around the table are all part of the experience. Wilkinson, whose impressive culinary background includes the Michelin-starred Black Swan in Yorkshire, describes the concept simply: “Someone cooks, everyone sits round the table, and nobody’s in a hurry to leave. Wilko’s is going to be that, but with a proper kitchen behind it.”

Occupying Point Chevalier Road’s recognisable former blue building, the restaurant has undergone a beautiful transformation, with warm stone walls, polished timber, tiled floors and French doors creating a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Across its bar, dining room and courtyard, the atmosphere is designed to encourage everything from an afternoon drink to a leisurely dinner.

The menu draws on Anglo-French cooking with influences from further afield, showcasing Wilkinson’s considerable experience. Expect kingfish ceviche with olives and fish-skin crackers, an enticing selection of pizzettes, and larger plates including spice-crusted beef bavette and house-made potato gnocchi. There’s also asparagus served alongside French-trimmed flounder, while freshly made classic cocktails, including Negronis on request, and a carefully curated wine list make a compelling reason to arrive early.

Sunday lunches promise to become a highlight, with generous cuts carved for the table and sides designed for sharing. Above all, Wilko’s has been conceived as a genuine neighbourhood local, somewhere to enjoy excellent food, good company and an evening without any particular hurry.
