Sarah Reid

Our Editor sits down with Sarah Reid to discuss her luxury body care brand Embodyme and the importance of self-care

Sitting at the intersection of beauty and wellness, Embodyme, the brainchild of Sarah Reid, transcends traditional beauty norms to inspire women into the realm of daily rituals for self-care. In a culture of modern beauty that continually seeks external validation, Embodyme harnesses the power of nurturing body oils as a gateway to enhanced wellbeing, echoing the profound belief that true beauty radiates from within.

Ultimately, Embodyme was a concept born from Sarah’s own transformative journey. After 15-years spent working for a number of renowned luxury beauty brands, she faced serious burnout and decided to pursue a different path, studying health coaching at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York. “I founded Embodyme to set a new bar for beauty that goes beyond skin deep” Sarah says. “Knowing the relentless demands faced by modern women and the conflict between our innate ability to nurture and the pressure of doing more, it has become too easy to lose connection with ourselves and the sense of overall wellness that comes with that.  I know that women need more opportunities in our modern world to connect with and nurture themselves.”

Embodyme’s ‘Peace’ Nurturing Body Oil

At the heart of Embodyme lies a mandate to revolutionise our approach to beauty and wellness. Anchored in the belief that self-care isn’t a luxury but a vital necessity, the brand invites women to embrace daily rituals of self care without the feelings of guilt. It acts as a gentle reminder to make time for nurturing oneself, underscoring the importance of taking small moments, particularly for women trying to ‘do it all’. As Sarah emphasises, “women have essentially doubled their workload taking on paid work on top of their unpaid work whilst sacrificing their personal wellbeing. To thrive in our modern world, it’s more important than ever to prioritise self-care.”

The Embodyme Nurturing Body Oils, a sublime fusion of potent plant based oils and certified natural fragrance, represent more than a skincare product. Not only have these oils been carefully created to offer intense hydration and nourishment to the skin, each one has a delicate natural fragrance designed to awaken the senses in different ways and enhance the emotions of courage, joy, peace, and kindness. Aiming to equip women with a transformative experience that extends beyond the bounds of traditional beauty, Embodyme embraces the essence of self-care, reminding women to put themselves first in an often chaotic and demanding world. As Sarah explains, “I want women to become the embodiment of self care.  We have to reimagine the framework for modern women so that we can be more connected and nurturing with ourselves, to love and care for ourselves as much as we love and care for others. Embodyme’s Nurturing Body Oils allow you to do just that.”

Serving delicious handmade pasta, Gemmi is David Lee’s tasty new Italian spot that has just opened in Commercial Bay

Founder of Namu Group, David Lee, has become one of the most prolific hospitality figures in our City. Only last month, his group opened a new restaurant on Ponsonby Road, Tobi, after opening a second Aigo outpost in Newmarket back in May. Now, Lee has just opened the doors to yet another new venture, Gemmi, this time in Commercial Bay, where it will sit alongside his other two venues in that precinct, Gochu and Pōni.

Gemmi is, at its heart, a pasta shop, a concept that Lee explains was inspired by simple Italian trattorias. Here, diners will find a relaxed, convivial vibe coupled with quick service and mouthwatering food that is never over-complicated. “I had yet to do a sole Italian spot,” Lee tells me, “but I have always enjoyed it and have incorporated some elements of Italian cuisine into my other sites.” He goes on, “At Gemmi, I wanted to offer simple classics with great ingredients served in a fast-paced, quirky environment… think delicious housemade pasta and sauces, burrata, tiramisu and more.”

The menu was developed by Namu Group’s Executive Head Chef, Yutak Son and is full of traditional Italian flavours with a few unique twists. To start, dishes like tuna tartare with basil, red onion, chillies, capers and lemon and delicate beef carpaccio with salsa verde and parmesan alongside the likes of pizza fritta (one with oyster mushrooms, blue cheese, walnuts and honey, the other with anchovies and nduja) and burrata. Larger plates include squid ink spaghetti with creamed paua and chives (one of Lee’s favourites, he tells me), rigatoni with spicy vodka sauce, fettuccine alla puttanesca and pappardelle with beef cheek ragu. Those with a sweet tooth will find solace in the time-honoured desserts of either a tiramisu or a lemon semifreddo served with extra-virgin olive oil and sea salt.

Gemmi’s drinks menu is also an ode to the classics, with Lee describing his wine list as “strong and approachable,” marrying New Zealand favourites with Italian and European varietals. These sit alongside a concise but considered cocktail offering, ranging from negroni to limoncello spritz to Americano and more, as well as beers from Urbanaut, Sawmill and Peroni.

The small but undeniably sleek space was brought to life by the talented team at CTRL Space to fit with Lee’s vision for a trattoria-style dining room that was comfortable and cool while still feeling somewhat elevated and elegant. “Gemmi is about having fun!” Lee says, “We want it to be the kind of casual, fun experience where you can grab some friends and smash a delicious pasta and enjoy some wine and lots of laughs, all while taking in our epic views over Auckland’s CBD.”

Open seven days from 11:30am until late, Gemmi offers Happy Hour from 4-5pm, perfect for after-work wines, as well as an express lunch option from 11:30am until 4pm, for those who just want to pop in for a quick, afternoon bite. Ultimately, Gemmi is a simple concept, perfectly executed, and is indeed a welcome addition to Commercial Bay’s dining line-up.

Monday – Sunday, 11:30am until 10pm

We sit down with our cover star Georgia Fowler, to talk modelling, moving to New York, motherhood and building a meaningful career

Photography by Brett Clarke
Styling by Miguel Urbina Tan

Recognised the world over, Georgia Fowler has graced the runways of Chanel, Miu Miu, Balmain, Armani, Jeremy Scott and more, has appeared on the covers of magazines like Elle, Numéro, L’Officiel and Harper’s Bazaar, in the pages of Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris, CR Fashion Book and W Magazine, along with fronting campaigns for brands like Tiffany & Co., and has even dipped her toes in television hosting. Most recently, she has joined the ranks of supermodel mums who are proving that success in the fashion industry certainly doesn’t end when you have children. For Fowler, who carries herself with a grounded authenticity born from her Kiwi upbringing, motherhood has felt like the beginning of an exciting new chapter, where the prolific model has re-found her voice, re-established her presence and is more focused than ever on building a sustainable, meaningful career. Now, on the cusp of welcoming her second child into the world, Fowler sits down with us to talk about what the future holds.

Georgia Fowler, like many models of her era, started out in the fashion industry at just 15 years old, and over the course of her career has carved out a remarkable niche in what is widely considered one of the most competitive and cut-throat industries in the world. Where Fowler differentiates herself from a number of her contemporaries is in her unique ability to straddle the realms of commercial and luxury fashion, her versatility one of the major reasons why she has enjoyed such longevity in the industry (despite still only being 31).

HardWear Large Link Earrings, HardWear Bold Graduated Link Necklace from Tiffany&Co. Skirt from Bottega Veneta.

Another reason, perhaps, is her attitude, both in her grounded approach and in her dedicated work ethic, both qualities she attributes to her upbringing in New Zealand. “My dad, who was an athlete, taught me the importance of coaching myself,” Fowler explains, “it was about being better, doing better, trying harder, so that’s how I approach most things. I am very determined.” It has been a vital quality for Fowler, it seems, who has thrived in a space that (despite its glamorous facade) is not for the faint of heart. With fierce competition and one’s work roster heavily dependent on whether or not they fit the prevailing aesthetic trends, models must make themselves stand out for far more than just their pretty faces. “It takes real grit,” Fowler tells me, “there are so many times when I have wanted to retreat home to the safety of New Zealand but my drive kept me going.” She pauses, “In modelling, it’s easy to get a few jobs but having a long career is a different story… you have to work as hard as you can to prove that you’re more than just your looks, that you can deliver the best possible outcome and be someone that brands want to work with again.”

Flame Ear Clips in by Jean Schlumberger from Tiffany&Co. Dress from Miu Miu.

In this respect, Fowler has more than proved her mettle. From starting with small jobs around New Zealand to quickly being picked up by international agency IMG (the same outfit that represents Bella and Gigi Hadid, Ashley Graham, Gemma Ward, Lauren Hutton, Milla Jovovich and most of the fashion world’s most famous faces) Fowler was soon being aligned with brands like Tiffany & Co. and Chanel, featured in the pages of French and Italian Vogue, shot by industry legends like Inez and Vindoodh and fronting major global campaigns for the likes of Victoria’s Secret. Now, her resume reads like a who’s who of fashion’s cognoscenti. “Casting directors were my ‘in’ into the industry,” the model explains, “I did quite a bit of work with Anita Britton and Katie Grand, who got me my first Miu Miu show and from there LOVE Magazine and a number of other opportunities.” She continues, “Before I met them I had been a bit pigeon-holed into this role of sexy commercial model. But they saw something different and gave me my first high fashion runway. Everything else major came from that.”

“It takes real grit… there are so many times when I have wanted to retreat home to the safety of New Zealand but my drive kept me going…”

Now, with such a wealth of experience behind her, Fowler tells me that she is able to take a more considered approach with her career. This has been crucial as she has had to learn how to grapple with the unavoidable balancing act that comes with being a mother. (She welcomed her first child, a daughter, in 2021). “I absolutely love being a mum,” Fowler says, “but it’s definitely been tricker to manage big international trips with a toddler,” she pauses, “I always felt it was important to keep that balance between my work and spending time with my kids, for my own sense of identity… and so far I’ve managed it, but becoming a first-time mum, you quickly realise that you can’t do everything.”

As a result, Fowler is far more discerning about the jobs she does, and how they will fit around her life, particularly as she and husband Nathan Dalah are set to welcome their second child in a matter of months. I wonder, for someone whose appearance is so intrinsically linked to their work, how the experience of pregnancy has been, given the dramatic physical changes that are part of the process. “It has given me a new appreciation for my body,” the model confirms, before elaborating, “having been in an industry like fashion my whole life where I am so aware of how my body looks, it’s been amazing to be able to step back and go, wow it’s just working and doing what it’s meant to do.”

With the birth of her daughter, Fowler joined the ranks of renowned supermodels who have shown that successful careers in fashion don’t end with children. In fact, having a family seems to have made Fowler more laser-focused than ever before, and her work is benefiting as a result. (You only have to scan these images to see the gravitas and charisma that Fowler brings to a photo shoot, even at five months pregnant.) This shift, a move to supporting models at every stage of their lives and careers, is just one of the many ways in which the industry at large has changed in the last decade or so.

“Sometimes you’re on top of the world and other times it feels slower, and that’s okay. when Covid hit, I was so burnt out. I didn’t know that I just needed to rest and focus on myself”

The paradigm of models having to start their careers at pre-pubescence, with the expectation that they would only be offered major jobs until their mid-thirties has (thankfully) been shattered, and now, the industry is understanding more and more the power of diversity in driving fashion forward. “There has been a real extension of the age range among top models, which is just so exciting to see,” Fowler says, “It’s something I feel so strongly about. I mean, it’s irresponsible for 16-year-olds to front major campaigns directed at adult women — what is that showing society?” She continues, “For me, seeing supermodels in their 50s and 60s working and thriving is incredible. The supermodels from my mum’s generation, the models I always looked up to, are still part of the industry in a huge way, so I feel like now, more than ever before, there’s space for everyone.”

All things considered, Fowler is still at the height of her career, despite the significant success she has already enjoyed. Importantly, what her experience has afforded her (alongside an enviable resume) is the ability to speak up for what she wants, to make her voice heard in the creative process and to ride the inevitable peaks and troughs of the industry to which she has dedicated so much of her life. “Sometimes you’re on top of the world and other times it feels slower, and that’s okay” Fowler says, “when Covid hit, I was so burnt out. I didn’t know that I just needed to rest and focus on myself, and it was over that time that I met my husband and we had our daughter, so you never know what incredible things can arise when you’re not only focused on work.” It has also, the model explains, given her an inherent understanding of who she is, what her priorities are, and what she wants to represent, both in her career and in her personal endeavours.

HardWear Large Link Earrings, HardWear Graduated Link Necklace, HardWear Bold Graduated Link Necklace from Tiffany&Co. Jacket, shorts and heels from Gucci.

Next year, Fowler and her family will be relocating from Sydney to New York, a city that has long been a source of inspiration for the model, and a place where she will be able to re-establish herself in the beating heart of the fashion industry. “I’ll be moving to New York with two kids, so the first thing will be getting a base and trying to settle into our new lives,” she says with a laugh. “Of course, I would love to continue working,” she continues, “but it will look very different from the last time I lived there… I’ll be taking fewer trips overseas and pushing myself to do larger campaigns so that I can still focus on what I care about.” Fowler pauses, “I want to grow my career and stay relevant but ultimately, family is everything for me right now.”

Elsa Peretti large Bone Cuff, T T1 Ring, T T1 Ring, Victoria Earrings, T T1 Half Diamond Necklace, Victoria Graduated Line Necklace from Tiffany&Co. Dress from Balenciaga.

Indeed, Fowler explains that her family has (and continues to be) the most significant grounding force in her life. Her relationships with her mother and sister (with whom she talks most days), and now, her husband, daughter and soon-to-arrive son, coupled with her upbringing in our tiny, Antipodean corner of the world, has afforded her a unique perspective on the world of luxury in which she has been entrenched since teenage-hood. Their influence has served to remind her of what is really important, and has given her the confidence to remain true to who she is intrinsically. “When I was starting out, I tried to please everyone,” she tells me, “but if you absorb it all too much, you can forget who you are or what you stand for.”

HardWear Large Link Earrings, HardWear Graduated Link Necklace, HardWear Bold Graduated Link Necklace, T True Narrow Ring, T T1 Ring, Lock Ring from Tiffany&Co. Dress and heels from Bottega Veneta.

When I ask Fowler how she’d feel if one day, her daughter, Dylan, expressed an interest in following in Mum’s footsteps, she laughs. “Well for starters, there would be some pretty strict rules,” she says, “and she certainly wouldn’t be able to pull the wool over my eyes.” She pauses, “but the way I was raised, I was encouraged to immerse myself in so many different sports and extracurriculars as well, and while I’d always support Dylan to follow her passions, I just want to be able to show her that there’s so much more out there, beyond looks alone.”

Armed with a powerful platform and a strong voice, and revealing that she still has a long list of professional goals that she would like to tick off from her new home in America, Fowler is entering what feels like an exciting new era. Motherhood, it seems, was just the beginning.

Sarah Mitchell Weston

We sit down with expert nutritionist Sarah Mitchell Weston on gut health, whole foods and her exciting new collagen brand, Prochaine

Having dedicated her life to studying nutrition (holding a PhD in the area) and working privately with her clients to improve their lives and long-term vitality, Sarah Mitchell Weston carries a veritable wealth of knowledge, particularly in the realm of gut health. Bringing a fresh and scientifically-considered approach to her clients’ care, Mitchell Weston is an expert at optimising health through nutrition via whole foods, careful supplementation and nurturing in her clients a healthy relationship with the food they eat. Realistic, long-term and personalised, her programmes are known to be life-changing, and now, Mitchell Weston is taking her influence in this space one step further with her newly launched collagen and supplement brand, Prochaine. Harnessing the power of marine collagen in conjunction with a unique French melon concentrate, Prochaine’s Collagen Beauty Blend is unlike others of its kind for the way it both supports collagen production and mitigates collagen breakdown — a dual action effect that makes it a powerful addition to any daily health regimen.

Here, we sit down with Sarah Mitchell Weston to talk about how to optimise our health and nutrition, and why Prochaine might just be the key step our beauty routines have been missing.

Exclusive Q&A

How did you get involved in the health and nutrition space? I’ve always been fascinated by diets and nutrition, maybe a product of growing up in the 80s (my mother tried every single diet conceived in that decade). But it wasn’t until my father passed suddenly at 52 (his poor diet and lifestyle had led to morbid obesity, type 2 diabetes, and eventually a lethal stroke) that a light went on, and my future direction became clear. Determined not to follow his example, I switched my university degree from archaeology to physiology and sports science, specialising in human nutrition postgrad. My passion for the subject only grew, and after a number of years in nutrition research, I launched my own private practice, Belle Époque Nutrition

What are some key aspects of health and nutrition that people often get wrong? I’d describe most people as overwhelmed, and that’s where they start to go wrong. There is so much conflicting information. We’re influenced by trends on social media and forever pursuing a quick fix. But when it comes to health and nutrition, there is almost never a ‘quick fix’ — trust me. Our health is a product of day to day choices, and it can take time to unravel destructive habits and replace them with nurturing ones. Another thing people sometimes get wrong is the pursuit of an ‘all or nothing’ approach to diet and exercise. It’s unsustainable, can lead to burnout and is the reason why dieting doesn’t work. Balancing hard work with self care will get you there eventually.

Prochaine’s Collagen Beauty Blends

What are the health habits you personally live by? Three things: movement, eating plants, and quality sleep. I move daily. I’m not talking about seven days a week gym attendance, but engaging in daily, purposeful movement. Increasingly, research and experience is showing us that regular exercise is not just for aesthetics or fitness; it is crucial for cognitive and emotional health and longevity. Walking, cycling, playing with your kids (dog in my case), dancing, yoga are all ways to incorporate more movement into your daily life. I also eat plants every day. This can sometimes be harder than you think if you don’t plan ahead: make sure that at least your breakfast includes fruit and/or veg. Choose plant-forward options when shopping and dining out. And quality sleep — I can’t stress how essential this is for all facets of health and wellbeing.

Let’s talk gut. What do people need to understand about this complex area of health? The gastrointestinal (GI) system is linked to literally every other organ and health system in your body. If you don’t look after your gut, there can be serious consequences for cardiovascular health, mental health, skin health and hormone production — to name a few. Gut health is quite complex, yes. There is no real definition of a ‘healthy gut’, as no two gut microbiomes are the same. And gut health is not strictly limited to the functionality of the microbiome, one needs to also consider the health of other GI organs such as the liver, for example. That being said, there are still some general principles everyone should try to follow to ensure optimal gut function. Eat probiotic foods every day — these include live culture yoghurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir. Eat prebiotic foods every day — these are usually high fibre foods, but specifically veggies like artichoke, garlic, onions, chicory. Eat a diverse range of plant foods — up to 30 different types per week. Additionally, limit intake of things that reduce the health and function of your gut and liver. These might include excess alcohol, sugar, ultra-processed foods, smoking/vaping, emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners. If you are experiencing symptoms such as IBS, inflammation, skin outbreaks, poor mood and suspect your gut health has something to do with it, look at what you are and aren’t feeding your gut and change this first. If you are confused about what you need personally, come and talk to me and my team, we specialise in gut health.

What inspired you to launch Prochaine?  I’ve taken a lot of supplements over the years, and as such spent time studying the industry and efficacy of nutraceuticals: I have learned how unregulated the system is. It’s alarming how little research there is behind common claims, and in some cases the low quality and efficacy of many products in the market. I was motivated to launch a brand that could confidently claim each product was backed by strong scientific evidence, while also including only high quality ingredients at effective doses.

What sets Prochaine apart from other collagen powders on the market today?  First and foremost, the dual action of the ingredients we’ve selected. Our endogenous collagen stores are a result
of collagen going in and collagen out. Filling up your collagen stores with collagen is necessary, especially as we age, but not as effective if you are not taking into account collagen ‘leaks’. And free radical damage is a major collagen leak. For Prochaine, we not only sourced a very high quality hydrolysed marine collagen powder for everyday supplementation, but paired this with Holimel® French melon concentrate, a powerful antioxidant that reduces collagen breakdown in the skin. This stuff is pretty special.

Not all collagen powders are created equal. How can people sort the wheat from the chaff, so to speak? Consider three things: quantity, source and supporting ingredients. Quantity is important for efficacy: generally speaking, a daily dose of between 8-10g collagen is ideal. Source: marine collagen is hands down the superior collagen source compared to bovine or porcine in terms of absorption and bioavailability, and generally, is a more sustainable choice too. Supporting ingredients: are they proven to aid collagen production or are they just unnecessary fillers at microscopic doses? And are the essential ones included? In particular, two vital cofactors are vitamin C and zinc. Even a mild deficiency in these essential nutrients will impair collagen synthesis. Taking a collagen supplement without these cofactors renders it basically just another protein powder.

How has Prochaine helped you? I am in the age zone where a daily collagen supplement is noticeably beneficial. I now take it daily, and the main thing I’ve noticed is significantly more hydrated and younger looking skin . Basically my skin is now in appreciably better condition than it was a year ago when we launched our first product. Prochaine has become an essential part of my daily routine. As a bonus, the inclusion of vitamin C and zinc in the Collagen Beauty Blend has definitely played a role in preventing illness — I haven’t had a single cold or flu  this year.

In fact, the whiskies that makeup Johnnie Walker Blue Label are meticulously handpicked from distilleries all over Scotland (including coveted barrels from long-closed ‘ghost’ distilleries) and are rigorously tested for taste and quality, with only 1 in 10,000 casks making the cut. It is a decidedly exclusive and discerning spirit, designed for those who value rarity, craftsmanship and quality above all else.

And while anyone can appreciate a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label from the outside, imbibe a sip of the golden liquid and you’ll understand the magic that this particular mix delivers. Its blend sees aged whiskies with gravitas and complexity collide with vibrant, younger varieties, offering a depth of flavour that is layered and intriguing.

On the palate, Johnnie Walker Blue Label makes a strong first impression with waves of spice that give way to smooth vanilla and honey. This is followed by notes of caramel and hazelnut that coarse through rich, dark chocolate before a luxuriously strong and smoky finish swoops in to deliver a warming, sumptuous finale. A drink as good as Johnnie Walker Blue Label need not be tampered with, so enjoy it neat and after a glass of ice-cold water to prepare the palate perfectly. The only thing that could make it better is good company, of course.

So, whether you’re looking for something for the person who loves to entertain, for a whisky-lover or simply a gourmand who truly appreciates the finer things in life, Johnnie Walker Blue Label ticks all the boxes. Its rare qualities and renowned reputation have given it the top spot on our wishlists this year, and the exclusive cache that surrounds it will make it the perfect gift for someone special.

Inside our celebration of the new Cracker Bay precinct and the unveiling of our highly-anticipated new Summer Issue

On Wednesday night, we invited a group of discerning denizens down to the waterfront to celebrate Auckland’s promising future. Alongside Winton CEO, Chris Meehan, we unveiled the full-scale plans for Cracker Bay, an impressive new precinct that will take shape along Auckland’s waterfront and comprise a multi-faceted hospitality offering, exclusive event venues, a private yacht club and an extension of the Westhaven boardwalk, as well as a full reimagining of the marina (allowing space for larger boats to berth).

It is an eye-watering undertaking for Winton, who conceived Cracker Bay in response to Aucklanders’ desire for developments that would make the most of our proximity to the water in a thoughtful, considered and timeless way. As such, Cracker Bay will revolutionise our relationship with the waterfront, and offer the kind of dining and event destination that our city has been sorely missing.

Given the ways in which this new precinct points to Auckland’s potential and promise, it felt fitting to be celebrating it alongside Denizen’s new summer issue, at the heart of which lies the idea of ‘promise’. With Georgia Fowler gracing the cover and the pages filled with people and brands doing interesting, creative and daring things, it is an issue that shows how, even through the toughest times, innovation and inspiration prevail.

Ultimately, it was a night of looking ahead and raising a glass to Auckland’s exciting future, which was made all the more delicious thanks to a selection of Bayside Rum cocktails and tasty bites from Savor Group. There is, it seems, much to be positive about as we approach the new year; and given that Denizen has long celebrated those in this city who are working tirelessly to propel Auckland’s progress, we are excited to continue to showcase its evolution and team up with people who believe in the promise of this place as much as we do.

Set on a piece of historic land in Arrowtown, Ayrburn is the spectacular new dining precinct that is shaking up New Zealand’s culinary scene

The Ayrburn story started over 150 years ago, when an expansive piece of land set against a striking, mountainous backdrop was purchased by Scottish-born William Paterson. It was turned into one of the first farms in the area, and remained a successful wheat, sheep and dairy operation until the early 21st Century. Over the years, it evolved to incorporate a striking homestead, woolshed, stables, a cart shed and dairy, each addition enhancing its charm. Now, after a series of meticulous renovations and painstaking restorations to the original buildings (in order to carefully maintain their original features), Ayrburn is poised to reopen as New Zealand’s most exciting new dining destination, courtesy of local developers Winton.

The new Ayrburn exists at the intersection of heritage and innovation. While the old farm buildings remain, they now serve to house a series of exceptional hospitality venues that will offer visitors a vast array of experiences. Officially open to the public from the ninth of December, Ayrburn is shaping up to be unlike any other dining precinct in the country, not only for its spectacular setting but also for the sheer breadth of its offering. From The Woolshed, where diners can order hearty and delicious, family-friendly meals by an open fire, to The Burr Bar, an intimate, calm and luxurious space in which drinks with friends will take on a decidedly elevated vibe, to The Manure Room, dubbed a ‘haven for wine lovers,’ and offering a more relaxed atmosphere and specialty wine tastings of Ayrburn’s own wine range, there truly is something here for any taste or proclivity.

Even those harbouring a sweet tooth will find everything they need at Ayrburn’s The Dairy, a destination filled with whimsical sweet treats that promise to hit the spot every time. While those who simply want to take in the peaceful setting with a coffee or wine in hand, or even with a picnic, can do so at The Dell, Ayrburn’s central, social lawn that will become something of a gathering space, as well as playing host to markets and other community events.

The venues mentioned above will be open in December, while in 2024, Ayrburn will add another four to its hospitality lineup, including Billy’s, its flagship fine dining restaurant, The Bakehouse, a casual drop-in where visitors can enjoy fresh coffee, pastries, pizza and more in an alfresco, garden setting, R.M. Specialty Meats, a traditional butchery selling the finest line-up of epicurean meats, and The Barrel Room, an exclusive, candle-litspace that can be booked for private functions and gatherings.

Overseen by industry leaders, from Executive Chef Richard Highnam to Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thompson (who has worked with winemaker Jody Pagey to bring expertise to Ayrburn’s award-winning wine range, served exclusively on site), Ayrburn’s many venues have been thoughtfully brought to life with the goal of offering something truly unique and memorable.

As Winton’s CEO, Chris Meehan says, “An incredible amount of time has gone into making sure Ayrburn will be a place for great times. It embodies our commitment to celebrating the stories of the past by giving them a new future… Ayrburn is not just a destination, it’s an invitation to have fun and experience the best of New Zealand’s food, wine and hospitality in a place chosen 160 years ago for being one of the country’s most stunning locations.”

Indeed, looking across Ayrburn’s historic buildings, set against the dramatic Central Otago backdrop that has, since time immemorial, endeared visitors to this place, it’s clear that this dining destination is out of the ordinary.

Winton’s design team have created some of the best interiors and gardens seen in the region, with Ayrburn humming with history even as it leads New Zealand’s hospitality scene into the future. Sit in any one of its many venues (like The Manure Room, allegedly once used by tipplers to evade the authorities during prohibition) under the carefully-preserved, barn-like roofs, surrounded by an extensive collection of New Zealand art, and you’ll feel the special energy of the place. From its majestic, postcard views of the Remarkables and Coronet Peak to its perfectly manicured grounds where mature trees sit alongside a natural stream that winds through the outdoor tables, Ayrburn is a place where exceptional food, great wine and good times collide in one of the most spectacular settings in the world.

Sure to become a hive of activity as soon as it opens, and the scene of many memorable occasions to come, Ayrburn is exactly where you should find yourself the next time you head to Queenstown and its idyllic surrounds. “We wanted to create a destination where locals and visitors alike could spend the day with friends and family, to simply enjoy being together over world-class food and wine,” Meehan reiterates. A simple goal, executed perfectly, plan your visit now.

Serving epic, free-range fried chicken, Brew’d Hawt is the new spot in the city you need to know about

After 14 years in the hospitality industry both as a chef, a manager and a venue owner (having run Mollie’s Boutique Hotel and previously owning Ponsonby’s Boy & Bird), Aari Puri decided that his next venture would be something simple and impactful, and Brew’d Hawt was born.

A few years ago, Puri opened his first Brew’d Hawt outlet in Manukau, with a vision for offering fried chicken that was bold, inventive and high quality. “It’s been the culmination of a life-long passion for me,” Puri tells us, who explains how Brew’d Hawt’s free-range fried chicken has been meticulously tested and crafted to retain its flavour and crunch, even when picked up as a takeaway and eaten 20 minutes later. “My idea was to create a nice, clean place to eat flavoursome fried chicken,” Puri says, “where people can find chilled vibes and good food and drinks, whether they want to dine-in or takeaway.” He continues, “as we say, friend chicken is a new religion.”

Indeed, fried chicken in its myriad forms is at the heart of Brew’d Hawt’s delicious menu, which, when combined with the vast array of spices and sauces, makes for a surprisingly diverse offering. There, you’ll find epic classics like chicken wings in buffalo, Korean and Brew’d Hawt’s ‘OG’ (which we’re told is a fresh take on Nashville) flavouring, alongside more unusual combinations like Szechuan pepper, lemon pepper and Thai Thai (a sticky, sweet combo lashed with coriander, kaffir lime and lemongrass).

In the burgers, the classics are joined by the likes of the Bombay G (a flavour sensation of Indian spices), the Truff’d (a fried chicken burger finished with truffle honey, truffle aioli and smoked cheddar) and a veggie offering that packs a serious punch.

All of the fried chicken and burgers can be ordered with a level of spice that works for you, whether it be none at all or the ‘Hawt Hawt’, with three other options in between.

OG Loaded Fries

As for sides, hungry punters can order dishes like sweet and spicy fried pickles, jalapeño cheese rolls, cucumber marinated in chilli, garlic, ginger and soy, a line-up of lettuce wedges (served with a range of toppings) and a variety of fries, whether you like them crinkle cut, shoestring or loaded. One particular highlight, however, is the mac n’ cheese, where an indulgent béchamel sauce is topped with a baked breadcrumb crust and a drizzle of chilli oil. This can either be ordered as a side, or, as Puri tells us, is a part of Brew’d Hawt’s ‘Secret Menu’, where he divulges that those in the know can order the ‘OG Mac’ — which is the OG burger with a hefty helping of mac n’ cheese added in.

This ‘Secret Menu’ can be found as an extra tab on Brew’d Hawt’s ordering screens, with Puri explaining that it will be constantly changing with various specials and tasty treats.

Those wanting some kind of libation with their fried chicken can choose from Estrella Damm on tap, a range of Fortune Flavour craft beer, Spy Valley wines, Catinella Sounds, Moet Chandon and an Italian Prosecco. Of course there is also an array of soft drinks served in vintage glassware (if dining in) and kombucha, too.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate Cheesecake

And if you harbour a sweet tooth, Brew’d Hawt’s desserts are sure to hit the spot, including a Whittaker’s chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake, with an Oreo cookie base, Whittaker’s milk chocolate and a peanut praline.

Shaping up to become a new go-to for a quick, delicious bite, or when a fried chicken craving comes on, Brew’d Hawt should definitely be added to your dining agenda.
