Where Industry Insiders Eat: Sophie Needham

Where Industry Insiders Eat: Sophie Needham

Originally from Sheffield in the UK, Sophie Needham has spent more than two decades working in hospitality, building a career defined by warmth, instinctive service and a genuine love of people. Her first job collecting glasses in a local pub at fifteen offered an early glimpse into the rhythm of the restaurant floor, a world she quickly discovered suited her natural ease with conversation and connection. Alongside hospitality, Needham also trained and worked as a beauty therapist, a profession that sharpened her understanding of customer care and attention to detail. Before settling in Auckland, she spent time in Melbourne, where the city’s fiercely proud coffee culture further ignited her appreciation for hospitality done well.

In New Zealand, her early career working with mentors Jackie Grant and Jo Pearson helped shape her approach to service. Today, under Savor Group’s ownership, Needham is venue manager at Amano, one of Auckland’s most consistently busy all-day eateries. From the early-morning coffee rush to long, bustling lunches, and late night dinners, Amano operates at a pace and scale few restaurants can match. Overseeing the front of house requires equal parts calm authority and instinctive hospitality, with Needham ensuring the room runs seamlessly while guests are welcomed with the easy charm and attentive service that have become hallmarks of this Britomart dining institution.

After Hours — Sophie Needham

Venue Manager, Amano

When I get the chance to dine out myself, I often find my way to one of the Savor Group venues. We’re lucky to have such a range of cuisines and atmospheres across the group, and they’re always a good bet for great food and service. Non Solo Pizza is probably my local. Sometimes it’s a quick pizza and beer at the bar, other times it turns into a long lunch with bubbles in the courtyard with friends.

I also really admire what Sarah and Jordan MacDonald are doing in Birkenhead. The small hospitality community they’re building there feels exciting and very genuine, and Duo Eatery is easily one of my favourite spots.

A long-standing hospitality tradition is yum cha at Grand Harbour. It’s the perfect way to catch up with friends when everyone finally has a day off, with plenty of beers and baskets of dumplings making the rounds.

Whenever I’m in Queenstown, I make a point of visiting Sherwood. There’s something about the place that immediately draws you in. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the food celebrates fresh local produce, and the whole experience encourages you to just slow down and enjoy.
