From the team behind Honey Springs and The Breakfast Club, The Banker has brought a distinctly cosmopolitan approach to East Auckland’s dining scene, combining Melbourne’s coffee culture with the character and sophistication of London’s old pubs and private members’ clubs. Whether you’re stopping by for a morning coffee, a leisurely brunch or something more substantial, this all-day restaurant, bar and café has plenty to warrant a visit.

The concept was shaped by Runo Group’s creative director, Shanay Yu, and, as the team tells us, “the idea was to capture [London’s] sense of heritage, character and understated sophistication,” they explain, “then reinterpret it in a way that feels fresh and relevant to Auckland.”

That brief has been realised by designer Paul Izzard of Izzard Design, who brought the vision to life with a rich, characterful, vintage-inspired space. Here, warm timber meets tailored detailing, bold artwork and heritage-inspired patterns, a combination that, in the team’s words, “feels established and timeless, while still being distinctly contemporary.” The interior suggests the place has been around for decades, which is precisely the point.

Food-wise, The Banker takes its cues from Melbourne’s dining culture, with a generous, approachable menu designed to carry diners from brunch through to dinner. Earlier in the day, expect an Italian take on avocado toast and indulgent focaccia French toast with pistachio, bacon and an espresso-maple drizzle. As the day progresses, the offering moves into more substantial territory. The Banker’s take on steak frites sees bavette steak accompanied by crispy fries and a generous drizzle of peppercorn cream, while the Carbonara Double Burger brings together two smashed beef patties, smoky scamorza, mushrooms and caramelised onions, finished with a rich truffle-parmesan cream. Elsewhere, gochujang and anchovy oil spaghetti combines anchovy-infused olive oil with fresh herbs, sun-dried tomatoes and rocket, while the salsiccia ‘volcano’ offers another intriguing option.

Then there’s the atmosphere, which the team sums up as “polished yet relaxed, somewhere you can settle in for specialty coffee, meet over brunch or return for drinks and dinner.” As they put it, “it has a sense of occasion without feeling overly formal, with considered food, well-made drinks and warm hospitality at the centre of the experience.”

With its distinctive interiors, expansive menu and an offering that extends well beyond the traditional café format, The Banker is one to keep in mind next time you find yourself dining in Auckland’s east.
