Denizen’s definitive guide to the best express lunches in the city

Despite best intentions, it’s not every day that we have the time to enjoy a long, leisurely lunch. Fortunately, for occasions when quick and easy is the only option, some of our favourite spots in the city have tailored offerings for those in a time crunch. From express menus to lunch deals served in haste, we’ve rounded up where to find the very best quick yet satisfying midday fare that doesn’t compromise on taste.

Jervois Steakhouse

Available: Friday, lunch
Offering: $55 for a main, a side and a glass of house wine (min 2 people, max 6 people)

This Ponsonby institution has long been a great choice for a casual but delicious workday lunch, and recently, the addition of a ‘Power Lunch’ (available exclusively on Fridays) has made weekday dining simpler than ever. Here, you’ll find an entree, main and a glass of house wine for $55, and the options are plentiful. As you’d expect, steak takes centre stage with four cuts to choose from, served alongside market fish, crumbed chicken, or vegetarian gnocchi and cult-status sides such as the crayfish mac ‘n’ cheese, duck fat roasted rosemary potatoes, the unforgettable signature creamed spinach, roasted beets with goats cheese and more. Bookings are encouraged.

For $50, choose from a considered list of Ebisu’s most beloved, contemporary Japanese dishes, including the chef’s selection of fresh market sashimi or a tasty salmon avocado roll to begin, one of three hero mains to follow (the teriyaki chicken with truffle oil is our preference), and a delightful fresh sorbet to finish. A consistently failsafe crowdpleaser, we can’t look past Ebisu for a fantastic lunch in the city — express or otherwise.

Devonport institution Stone Oven has been reimagined, with new owners and a bold new vision

Some places seem as if they’ve always been there — woven into the rhythm of a community, and for Devonport locals, Stone Oven is one of those places. A mainstay for over two decades, the beloved café had weathered its share of challenges. But when Brendan and Dani took the reigns four months ago, they saw not just a space in need of revival, but an opportunity to honour the past while shaping the future. “Stone Oven blends warmth, nostalgia, and a fresh, vibrant energy,” says Brendan.

Owners, Brendan and Dani

With backgrounds spanning fine dining institutions like Paris Butter, The River Café, and a five-year tenure at Cazador (where Brendan was head chef), the couple has hospitality in their bones. They’ve done the food truck hustle while raising a young family, and now, with their kids a little older, stepping into a bricks-and-mortar eatery feels like the right next move.

Their vision for the Devonport institution was nostalgia, but elevated. Stone Oven’s menu reimagines Kiwi café staples with a refined touch — think eggs benedict with hollandaise espuma, avocado on sourdough lifted with gochugaru and radish, and a venison smashburger that already has regulars talking. The cabinet stays true to its roots, with freshly baked lamingtons and lolly cake on offer — a nod to the café’s early days.

Left: Venison smash burger. Right: Mince on toast

On the coffee front, they take their brews very seriously indeed. They’ve partnered with Eighthirty, pouring their classic espresso blend alongside rotating single-origin filter options. A top-tier slayer Steam EP machine ensures every pour is dialled in, and sustainability is front of mind — milk from Kaipaki Dairies arrives in reusable vessels, while surplus filter coffee finds new life in their grapefruit cold brew. Matcha has also become a focus, and as much, Stone Oven’s is some of the best in the city. Soon, a liquor license will usher in Italian Aperitivo cocktails, local beers, and a wine list showcasing New Zealand’s best.

The space itself tells a story. A century-old building, restored with care. Rustic charm meets mid-century modern, thanks to a hands-on collaboration with Millé — painted, plastered, and lovingly revived by Brendan and Dani themselves. Every imperfection embraced, every detail considered. “We’re obsessed with our old building,” says Brendan, “We love every little nook, cranny, and imperfection (and there are plenty!).”

At its heart, Stone Oven is about connection — to place, to the past, and to a culture of hospitality that makes Auckland’s café scene one of the best in the world. As Brendan puts it, “We’re selling nostalgia. We’re selling Auckland.” And Devonport is all the better for it.

With a new chef at the helm and a delicious new menu, Waiheke Island’s Ki Māha should be on your hit list

With the golden light of autumn lingering over Onetangi Beach, Ki Māha is embracing the season with a refreshed menu under the expert guidance of newly appointed head chef Vicky Shah. This is casual beachside dining elevated to an art form — a celebration of provenance, craft, and the island’s abundant offerings.

Head Chef Vicky Shah

Shah, whose career spans some of the country’s most lauded restaurants — including The Sugar Club, Ahi, and Cassia — brings a distinctive approach to Ki Māha’s culinary philosophy. His dishes balance innovation with deep respect for Aotearoa’s seasonal produce, weaving together vibrant flavours that speak of place and time. His passion for cooking, nurtured from childhood, translates into a menu that is both sophisticated and deeply comforting.

Left: Pan-seared scallops. Right: Raw bigeye tuna

Autumn’s arrival invites indulgence, and Ki Māha’s new offerings are a masterclass in refined simplicity. Freshly shucked oysters with green apple ice capture the lingering warmth of the season, while the venison tartare — elevated with smoked mayonnaise and brioche — brings an earthy richness. Pan-seared scallops, paired with parsnip purée and crispy jamón, offer a balance of texture and depth. And, for those seeking true decadence, the 55-day aged eye fillet, served with black garlic and tarragon mustard, is a standout.

With the island’s clement weather holding, long lunches that stretch into golden evenings remain a tempting proposition. Whether you’re drawn by the spectacular views and impeccable wine selection or the thoughtful craftsmanship of Shah’s menu, Ki Māha continues to define what beachside dining should be: elegant, effortless, and unforgettable.

Takapuna Surf Club is set to become the North Shore’s go-to beachside destination

New Zealand’s answer to the laid-back yet convivial surf clubs Australia is famed for, a new venture by the hospitality collective behind Queens Rooftop & Wineshop is set to shake up the dining scene on the North Shore.

Takapuna Surf Club — an all-day bar and eatery designed by the experts at CTRL-Space, sits perched above Takapuna Beach, with sweeping views and multiple spots to catch the day’s rays. Holding pole position, and boasting an exceptional food offering and a fantastic array of drinks, this spot caters both to those seeking a casual locale for a catch up with the kids in tow, and those looking for a more refined experience.

“Takapuna Surf Club is about bringing people together over great food, perfectly mixed cocktails, shared experiences, and a little bit of fun.” says co-founder Callum O’Brien. “Not only have we built a fantastic food and beverage offering, we’ve created a space for the community to connect and to feel proud of.”

Left: Greek Salad with Zani Zeus Feta & Caper Vinaigrette. Right: Slow-cooked lamb ribs with garlic toum & Szechuan spices

At the helm of the kitchen is Maia Atvars, co-founder and celebrated chef behind Queens Rooftop, bringing his signature touch to a menu that reimagines nostalgic clubroom dining. Elevated yet familiar, it offers everything from prawns on ice to golden schnitzels and stacked subs. The standout? Authentic wood-fired pizzas, perfected in an imported Italian oven. Even the kids’ menu goes beyond the ordinary, delivering wholesome, satisfying plates that cater to both young diners and discerning parents alike.

Bringing their cocktail expertise from Queens Rooftop to the Shore, the team has crafted a drinks menu that blends nostalgia with fresh, seasonal flair. Ice-cold beers on tap cater to a casual post-swim refresh, while crisp bubbles set the tone for a leisurely long lunch. As the sun dips, fruit-forward cocktails — rooted in classic favourites — offer the perfect evening indulgence.

Fried Chicken lollipops with sweet & sour pineapple chimichurri sauce

But the offering goes beyond great food and drinks. The expansive eatery also features a dedicated games area, featuring pinball, arcade machines, and high-tech dart lanes imported from Europe, while sports fans can catch major games on large screens throughout the venue. Music is at the heart of the experience, with DJs spinning vinyl to set the mood — whether it’s a mellow Sunday session or a lively Saturday night.

CTRL-Space have carefully crafted the interiors to balance laid-back, classic surf club nostalgia with a nod to more metropolitan iconic beachside destinations, using timeless materials like natural wood, stone, and breeze blocks to create an effortlessly inviting atmosphere.

Whether for casual drinks, long lunches, convivial dinners, or game-day gatherings, the setting lends itself to any and every occasion — something that didn’t happen by chance, “We couldn’t resist having some fun with this concept — a throwback to weekends at the local surf club, especially for those who grew up in small-town beach communities,” says Sam Griffin, Creative Director of CTRL-Space, “For so many Kiwis, the surf club was more than just a place; it was where friends and families gathered, where sandy feet and sun-soaked afternoons turned into laid-back evenings. We’ve designed a space that captures that effortless, nostalgic charm. Turn up in your togs and towel, grab a beer and a slice of pizza, and settle into the vibe.”

Boozy plum knickerbocker glory with plums, cherries & meringue

Harrison Ford brings his signature sense of humour to Glenmorangie’s new campaign

Glenmorangie, the revered Highland distillery, has launched its most ambitious campaign to date, Once Upon a Time in Scotland — starring cinematic legend Harrison Ford, no less. Directed by Australian actor and filmmaker Joel Edgerton, the campaign sees Ford bring his signature wry humour to a series of episodic films that transport viewers to Glenmorangie’s picturesque Highland home. Shot in a deliberately ‘off-script’ style, the films capture Ford’s journey as he immerses himself in the artistry, traditions, and local charm of Scotland’s whisky-making heritage.

Filmed across the breathtaking landscapes of the north-east Highlands, Once Upon a Time in Scotland takes whisky lovers behind the scenes at Glenmorangie’s historic distillery in Tain, the storied 19th-century Ardross Castle, and the dramatic surroundings of Loch Glass. Through candid, lighthearted encounters, Ford bonds with the real Glenmorangie distillery team, navigates Scottish pronunciation, and experiences kilt etiquette — all while savouring the craftsmanship behind each bottle of Glenmorangie whisky.

Lisa Mackenzie, General Manager of Moët Hennessy New Zealand, says, “Collaborating with Harrison Ford has been a dream come true — he is a genuine single malt whisky fan and appreciates the craft that goes into every bottle of Glenmorangie. As a passionate and unique storyteller, he has certainly stamped his distinctive and authentic mark on this campaign.”

To coincide with the campaign launch, Glenmorangie has reimagined their signature single malt The Original, now aged for an additional two years to be a 12 Years Old age statement. After years of experimentation, Glenmorangie’s whisky creators discovered that extending the maturation period from ten to twelve years enhances the original’s signature notes, resulting in a single malt swirling with creamy vanilla, citrus zest, honey, and ripe peach — a richer, creamier, more luscious evolution of its flagship whisky.

The Original 12 Years Old is now available at premium liquor stores across New Zealand — making the perfect gift for whisky aficionados who appreciate depth, craftsmanship, and a touch of Scottish storytelling.
