The Dior Humanitarian Award Winner, Deborah Smith

Deborah Smith is the creator of Cloud Workshop, a free art programme that provides a reprieve for young people dealing with grief. Smith is both an established photographer and photography teacher who has worked at St Cuthberts College and Unitec. She oversees the classes which are held approximately every six weeks and are attended by bereaved children. For hours at a time, they are encouraged to immerse themselves in creating their own contemporary art as an escape from the sadness of what is happening around them. Having lost her own father at the age of 18, Smith has long been interested in finding ways to support children who have lost loved ones. She operates the programme in association with the Mercy Hospice.
