Adding to Auckland’s ever-expanding Korean dining scene is Gui, a charcoal-fired barbecue restaurant from the team behind Olle. Its name translates to ‘grill’ in Korean, and that name captures the concept neatly – an authentic, sociable dining experience, built entirely around a charcoal grill.
Where most of the city’s Korean barbecue is cooked over gas, Gui does things the traditional way. Chef and co-owner Kevin grew up in Pohang, South Korea, “where charcoal BBQ is a big part of the local food culture,” and he has brought that style here – a blend of charcoal and walnut wood chips lending the meat a rich, gently smoky depth. Many of the cuts arrive lightly pre-seared, needing barely a minute on each side so that diners can enjoy the ritual of cooking without any guesswork.

The menu pairs the grill with generous Korean dishes made for sharing. Early favourites include the Pohang-style crudo and a classic spicy seafood tofu stew (sundubu jjigae), while the beef scotch, pork belly and wagyu short rib have proven the most popular cuts from the barbecue. The kitchen’s own recommendation is to order the cold bibim noodles alongside – spicy, refreshing and a classic foil to hot grilled meat. Dessert takes the form of a warm apple pancake inspired by Korean street snack hotteok, served with crunchy seeds and caramel ice cream, while craft beer and soju make for perfectly paired drinks, with makgeolli (Korean rice wine) to come.

Designed by JM of February Design, the space is modern and industrial in feel, its concrete and metal finishes warmed by natural timber. Thoughtful touches abound: each table has its own extraction vent and, because the grills aren’t built in, they can be cleared away entirely once the cooking is done, leaving guests to linger over the rest of the meal in comfort.
Relaxed, welcoming and delightfully social, Gui is a great spot to settle into with family, friends or workmates – and one well worth seeking out.
