After ten years spent building an international following through e-commerce and more than 100 retail partners, Marle has opened its first standalone boutique in Newmarket’s Osborne Lane, marking a major moment for a New Zealand label that has grown steadily from a personal idea into a brand with customers across 29 countries.

Founded by Juliet Souter in 2015, Marle has always centred its collections on natural fibres, enduring silhouettes and an intuitive approach to dressing, with pieces designed to be lived in and returned to often. Until now, much of that experience has taken place through a screen or within another retailer’s environment; the new boutique gives the clothing a setting entirely its own, allowing customers to properly understand the texture, weight and fabrication that have become so central to the brand. “Marle has always been about how a piece feels, not just how it looks,” says Souter.

Architect Rufus Knight was brought in to create a space that would give the clothes room to breathe while still feeling distinctly Marle. Across 100 square metres, Egyptian limestone floors, rendered plaster walls, silk curtains and custom stainless-steel fixtures sit alongside fabric screens and the building’s original sandblasted windows, creating a restrained backdrop that places the collections firmly at the centre.

“For ten years, most people have experienced the brand through a screen or in someone else’s store,” Souter says. “This is the first opportunity for us to share the full experience ourselves. The textures, the weight of the fabrics, the atmosphere of the space and the conversations that happen within it.”

For Souter, who grew up nearby, the Osborne Lane location adds another layer of significance to an already important milestone, bringing Marle into a part of the city she knows well while giving the brand a physical presence it has spent a decade growing towards. With further retail opportunities already under consideration, the opening feels less like an arrival than the beginning of a much bigger chapter.
