If you have ever visited Waiheke in the summer, chances are you’ve seen the crowds at Island Gelato Company. Sugar-craving souls, huddled around the container ship gelateria, frantically waving crumpled bills in front of quick-scooping staff in the hopes of being served next. It’s utter pandemonium — and well worth the trouble. For what they hold within happens to be some of the most sensational frozen delights we’ve ever touched tongues to. Now, bringing the goods to this side of the Hauraki, the iced treat aficionados have opened their second shop in the old Auckland Ferry Building.
Facing out to the water, directly opposite the entrance to Terminal One, the new stop-in is worth a visit regardless of whether you’re hopping onto a boat or not. A snug yet light-filled space, upon entering you’re confronted with a bright array of sorbets and gelato creams — and one unholy tough decision. Not your standard vanilla, strawberry or chocolate chunk choices, these are some hard-hitting flavours you have to pick from. Coconut latte; Thai basil and mandarin; banana, bourbon and walnut praline; along with the über indulgent ‘darkest chocolate’ to name a few. Signature varieties are interspersed with limited edition chef’s specials and there are even flavours for those averse to dairy, gluten and anything animal.
Also boasting an affogato menu, brioche gelato sandwiches, shakes, classic sodas, Best Ugly bagels and a flowing tap of Belgian hot chocolate, we plan on working our way through the menu this summer.
