The best seat in this Auckland home is almost impossible to determine. A pair of inviting armchairs face Rangitoto, a sprawling sofa gathers around the harbour outlook, while elsewhere, dining chairs sit beneath a cascade of sculptural glass. Each setting has been composed with the same exacting eye, with furniture doing much of the heavy lifting within this striking home’s design.

Designed by Daniel Marshall Architects, with interiors by Bespoke Interior Design, the substantial coastal residence occupies a commanding site above one of Auckland’s most popular beaches. Concrete, steel and expansive glazing give the architecture its scale, but inside, the mood is much more intimate. Walnut, stone, tactile upholstery and carefully chosen furniture bring a palpable sense of warmth to the home’s grand volumes.

In the main living room, a bespoke sectional sofa sets the scene. Designed specifically to work in two directions, the generous sofa creates a more intimate setting towards the fireplace, while the reverse opens onto the terrace and water beyond. Its low, broad proportions suit the scale of the room, but equally importantly, leave the horizon largely uninterrupted.

In the entrance, a custom walnut, glass and marble console, accompanied by an oversized walnut-framed mirror and brass vessel, introduces the material palette that continues throughout the house. From here, timber-lined walls and pale stone floors lead towards the living spaces and, almost immediately, the water.

As the house opens to the exterior, the furniture becomes part of the architecture’s framing device. Seating is kept low, generous and relatively quiet in tone, allowing the changing light and view to provide the colour. Seen more closely, however, the scheme is anything but minimal. Bouclé-like upholstery, richly veined stone, walnut, leather and fine metal detailing give each setting considerable depth.

In the lounge, the Flexform Boss armchair adds a more sculptural note to the arrangement. Its generous proportions and enveloping form create a distinct reading or conversation seat, while its refined upholstery complements the softer lines of the sofa. Positioned within the larger living composition, it brings a sense of quiet definition without interrupting the room’s connection to the view.

Elsewhere, the double-height dining room marks a change in tempo. At its centre is a custom dining table, engineered at almost four metres long to meet the proportions of the room. Around it, Poliform Ventura chairs bring a lighter, more tailored counterpoint to the table’s monumental form. Their upholstered construction and supportive armrests introduce comfort and presence, while the suspended glass installation above draws the eye through the full height of the space. The chairs also reinforce the home’s preference for furniture that feels considered rather than overtly decorative.

That same design vocabulary continues into the kitchen, where Poliform Ventura bar stools sit against the stone and warm metallic island. Their elevated proportions establish a natural connection with the dining chairs, while the upholstered seats and supportive backs make the island suitable for longer, more informal meals. Against the extensive walnut cabinetry, the stools create a measured contrast without competing with the material richness of the room.

Viewed together, the kitchen and dining spaces demonstrate how repetition has been used sparingly. Rather than filling the house with matching furniture, related forms recur just enough to establish continuity. The Ventura chairs and bar stools speak to one another, while their different proportions and settings prevent the interior from feeling overly prescribed.

Elsewhere, the mood becomes more private. A separate snug pulls away from the openness of the primary living spaces, with generous upholstered seating, a long timber coffee table and a warmer, more enveloping palette. It was conceived as somewhere for the family to watch films, play games or retreat from the larger communal rooms, and its furniture responds accordingly.

Individual seating moments are treated with equal care. The sculptural high-backed leather armchair and matching ottoman introduce a distinctly European note against the walnut panelling, their enveloping form and dark finish offering a counterpoint to the softer, paler upholstery elsewhere. Rather than competing for attention, pieces such as these are positioned almost as punctuation within the broader scheme.

Upstairs, looking towards the view, a Poliform JANE LARGE armchair and footrest create a quieter seating moment. The generous chair offers a comfortable place to pause and take in the landscape, while its accompanying footrest extends the sense of ease. Positioned against the expansive outlook, the pair demonstrates the same balance found throughout the home: furniture with enough presence to define a space, but never so much that it overwhelms the view.

The bedrooms take the palette down another register. Custom headboards, bed bases and bedside tables continue the home’s tailored approach, while stone, timber and muted textiles maintain the visual connection to the main living spaces. In the principal suite, a pair of lounge chairs turns towards the sea, creating a quiet place to sit at the end of the day rather than simply filling the room with furniture.

Even the bathroom is orientated towards the landscape. Pale stone and a freestanding bath keep the space materially restrained, allowing the window to become its most compelling feature.

What gives this home its confidence is the mix. Bespoke New Zealand-made pieces sit alongside refined Italian design from Studio Italia, rather than every room being built around a single brand or recognisable hero piece. Poliform’s precise silhouettes bring lightness to the dining and kitchen areas, Flexform adds a more sculptural note in the lounge, and custom furniture responds directly to the unique dimensions of the architecture.

The result feels collected rather than decorated, and appropriately so. In a house where the view will always command attention, the furniture succeeds by giving the interiors a presence entirely of its own.
