Few motifs in jewellery are as instantly recognisable as Jean Schlumberger’s Bird on a Rock, and more than 60 years after its debut, Tiffany & Co. is giving the 1965 design a compelling new chapter. Under the creative direction of Nathalie Verdeille, the House has expanded the collection with new figurative pieces alongside two more abstract interpretations, Wings and Feathers, translating the idea of flight into jewellery that feels distinctly contemporary.

The new Wings pieces alternate sculpted 18k gold and platinum feathers, with diamonds channel-set into the platinum elements to heighten their sense of movement, while the Feathers high jewellery suite takes the motif into more dramatic territory through intricate compositions of diamonds, platinum and yellow gold. Developed over almost three years, the latter recreates the softness and fluidity of plumage in precious materials with remarkable precision.

Selena Gomez recently offered a particularly glamorous demonstration of how the collection translates beyond the jewellery box, wearing Bird on a Rock Feathers earrings and a diamond-set Feathers bracelet on the red carpet. Paired with Jean Schlumberger Stitches and Vigne rings and Tiffany & Co.’s Sixteen Stone ring, the pieces brought a cooler, more contemporary edge to the House’s famously whimsical motif.
It is a clever evolution of one of Tiffany & Co.’s most enduring signatures, preserving Schlumberger’s sense of whimsy while giving Bird on a Rock a decidedly modern edge. The new pieces are available now at selected Tiffany & Co. stores.
