This season in New York, the most persuasive collections came from designers who seemed less concerned with announcing the next great shift in fashion than with refining what their houses already do exceptionally well. There was a noticeable loosening of familiar codes, whether through the romantic turn at Khaite, Veronica Leoni’s increasingly assured minimalism at Calvin Klein, or Rachel Scott’s freer interpretation of Proenza Schouler. Elsewhere, Magda Butrym brought her distinctly European sensuality to New York, while Ralph Lauren continued to prove that opposing ideas can coexist beautifully when the styling is confident enough. These are the five Spring 2027 collections worth knowing.
Calvin Klein

At Calvin Klein, Veronica Leoni is finding increasing confidence in saying less. Spring 2027 was built around the kind of pieces that have long given the American house its authority, but rather than recreating an earlier era of minimalism, Leoni reconsidered what that restraint might look like now. The collection centred on a tightly edited wardrobe of slender trousers and skirts, languid dresses, immaculate jackets, denim and deceptively simple jersey, with almost everything dependent on cut rather than embellishment for its impact.
Georgia O’Keeffe’s famously disciplined way of dressing provided one point of reference, particularly in the collection’s sense of repetition and uniformity. A blazer rendered in cotton instead of conventional wool, pale high-waisted jeans and a grey plaid trench spoke to a wardrobe designed to be combined and recombined rather than divided into isolated looks. Silk jersey appeared across both day and evening, while bandeau pieces shifted easily between layering devices and more exposed propositions.
What made the collection compelling was how little it appeared to need. A white silk slip dress relied on the contrast between lustrous and matte surfaces rather than decoration, capturing the precision running through the wider show. Calvin Klein’s past makes minimalism unavoidable territory for any designer taking on the house, but Leoni’s Spring collection suggested she is becoming more comfortable inhabiting that legacy without allowing it to dictate every move. The result felt clean rather than nostalgic, and significantly more resolved than a simple exercise in archival revival.
Khaite

Few collections shifted their own established language as convincingly as Khaite. Catherine Holstein has turned leather, sharp silhouettes and a distinctly Manhattan severity into some of the most recognisable codes in contemporary American fashion, but Spring 2027 introduced something softer and considerably more romantic without losing the confidence that made the brand so desirable in the first place.
Venice provided the catalyst, particularly Holstein’s fascination with the layered interiors and faded grandeur of the Gritti Palace. Against an opening look of a white bra and restrictive black leather skirt came flowered lace, lingerie-inflected pastels, translucent mousseline and airy silhouettes edged with horsehair, creating movement where Khaite has often favoured structure. Architectural detailing from the Venetian hotel also found its way into cut-outs and decorative treatments, while lace, visible handwork and exposed corsetry gave the collection a more intimate quality.
The shift was important because Holstein did not simply replace toughness with prettiness. Instead, she allowed the two ideas to sit against one another. Corsetry remained, leather remained, and the body was still central, but delicacy and ornamentation were no longer treated as things that needed to be stripped away.
Perhaps most relevant beyond the runway were the sheer evening jackets and slim matching skirts edged with soft ruffling, which offered an appealing alternative to the predictable black cocktail dress. Khaite has become extraordinarily adept at understanding what women want before that desire becomes obvious, and Spring 2027 suggested the mood may be moving away from anonymous restraint towards clothes with a little more romance, eccentricity and visible hand.
Magda Butrym

Magda Butrym’s arrival in New York came at a pivotal moment for the Polish label, coinciding with the opening of its Mercer Street store and the continued expansion of a substantial American following. Rather than marking the moment with an escalation of the sculpted silhouettes and unabashed glamour for which she is already known, Butrym took Spring 2027 somewhere more delicate, examining femininity through transparency, memory and the domestic codes traditionally associated with women.
Polish artist Natalia LL provided an important point of reference. Her work challenged ideas surrounding gender, consumer culture and female representation, giving Butrym an intriguing framework from which to consider the relationship between traditional femininity and female autonomy. The humble apron became one of the collection’s recurring devices, drawn partly from memories of the designer’s grandmother and translated through multiple layers of translucent silk.
It could easily have tipped into sentimentality, but the better looks carried enough tension to prevent that. A sheer nude dress beneath an equally translucent trench, its pockets filled with roses, gave romanticism a strangely assertive quality. Elsewhere, the more recognisable Butrym woman emerged through sharply constructed jackets, feathered necklines and cocktail dresses, while button-front dresses and slip layers brought the collection closer to everyday dressing.
That movement towards wearability may prove particularly important as Butrym establishes herself further in New York. Her appeal has always been rooted in a very specific, unapologetic kind of femininity. Spring 2027 did not dilute it, but widened its vocabulary, suggesting softness can be every bit as commanding as the tightly cinched leather and body-conscious eveningwear on which the label first built its reputation.
Proenza Schouler

Rachel Scott’s second runway outing for Proenza Schouler offered a far clearer indication of what the house might become under her direction. Where her debut necessarily carried the complications of stepping into a brand shaped over two decades by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, Spring 2027 felt substantially more relaxed, finding room for Scott’s own tactile sensibility without severing the intellectual, fashion-forward attitude long associated with Proenza.
New York women provided the reference rather than any singular historical period, particularly the city’s habit of disregarding conventional distinctions between clothes intended for day and those reserved for evening. That looseness was evident in sequinned dresses styled with flat sandals and in evening pieces cut with the ease of everyday clothes. One strapless design gathered softly through the waist before falling towards the ankle, while another pairing exposed the side of the torso through an asymmetric top and low-slung skirt.
Daywear was treated with equal intelligence. Darting, pleating, curved stripes and structured peplums played with the waist without resorting to rigid hourglass dressing, while graphic zebra jacquards gave coats and dresses a more assertive visual identity. Scott’s strength with knitwear remains evident, but this collection showed a willingness to move confidently into less familiar territory.
The return of the PS1 in a softer, curved new iteration was particularly telling. Rather than pretending the house arrived without a past, Scott is beginning to decide which pieces of that history deserve another chapter. It is a more convincing strategy than wholesale reinvention, and Spring 2027 suggested Proenza Schouler is becoming both freer and more recognisably hers.
Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren opened New York Fashion Week with the kind of proposition that feels increasingly rare: clothes designed around personality rather than a single prescriptive silhouette. Spring 2027 moved between the polished and the deliberately undone, allowing eveningwear, tailoring, denim and utilitarian pieces to collide in combinations that would appear contradictory almost anywhere else.
A richly patterned brocade jacket met crisp white cargo trousers, while a cropped velvet jacket embellished with feathers was placed against dark denim. A pointed corset accompanied uncomplicated chinos, and a dramatically elongated pinstriped waistcoat brought an almost historical sense of ceremony to the runway. Even the exaggerated necktie worn with a tonal shirt and faded jeans nodded towards the wide ties with which Lauren began his career in the late 1960s.
The more romantic fabric treatments, however, gave Spring 2027 its real richness. Silks and metallic textiles were manipulated to appear aged and imperfect, gold beading dissolved gradually across eveningwear, and technical organza took on the softness of something faded by sunlight. These were contemporary pieces deliberately deprived of machine-like perfection, allowing the maker’s hand to remain visible.
After almost six decades, Lauren hardly needs to manufacture a new identity for every season. His advantage lies in the extraordinary breadth of the world he has already created, and Spring 2027 showed how compelling that world remains when its opposing characters are allowed to meet.
