Denizen is deeply saddened by the recent passing o Denizen is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Pip Cheshire CNZM 1950 – 2026, a towering figure in contemporary architecture whose influence reshaped the way we think about cityscapes and buildings in Aotearoa.⁠ ⁠ A founding director of Bossley Cheshire Architects alongside Pete Bossley, Pip later established Cheshire Architects in 2003. It was here that he refined a distinctly thoughtful architectural language, rigorous yet humane, ambitious yet deeply grounded in place.⁠ ⁠ Under his leadership, the studio delivered projects from award-winning homes to those with enduring cultural significance, such as the revitalisation of Q Theatre and the quietly confident elegance of Hotel Britomart. Earlier contributions within the Britomart precinct helped set the tone for a more considered, globally attuned approach to urban renewal in Tāmaki Makaurau. ⁠ ⁠ Beyond buildings, Pip was a mentor, teacher and national President of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects. Awarded the NZIA Gold Medal in 2013 and appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2024, he was recognised not only for his work, but for the intellectual honesty and integrity that defined it.⁠ ⁠ Witty, exacting and generous, Pip shaped spaces and conversations in equal measure.
