Putting Michelin star experience into practice, this eatery spotlights only the freshest of ingredients.
With an admirable vision of keeping up with the world’s best restaurants, Kingsland’s newest and arguably most refined dining resident, Phil’s Kitchen, is putting its proprietor’s esteemed experience into practice. With a highly impressive career under owner and chef Phil Clark’s belt already, including being trained for the famous kitchens of London by local guru, Sidart’s Sid Sahrawat before working alongside celebrity chefs Anthony Demetre and Tom Aiken at Wild Honey, Arbutus, as well as Aiken’s eponymous eatery in Chelsea, and most recently Meredith’s before obtaining the keys to his first restaurant venture, it’s no wonder the offerings here are first class.
Epitomising the superlative standards are the daily created and printed menus dictated by the market’s freshest produce available that day and the dedication to using the whole animal when it comes to the meat-centric dishes. The concise selection of three course modern European bistro fare is set to satiate patrons with both the introduction of interesting cuts and the inclusion of failsafe favourites from kingfish ceviche to crispy pork belly to smoked loin of beef, all daintily presented.
Displaying true Kiwi determination, Clark worked day and night for a fortnight after receiving the keys to ensure his restaurant lived up to his exceptional ideals on opening night. From the interior’s overall design to the building, plastering, painting and plumbing, Clark’s done it all along with the help of friends and family. The modest and intimate interior keeps true to Parisian style bistros, and with only 24 seats, Clark’s vision is not to see a high turnover of tables but for people to want to savour the evening with a three course meal enjoyed with a glass of wine in hand. We won’t be surprised if bookings at Kingsland’s hottest new address become challenging to acquire so you’d be wise to call in sooner rather than later.
