Dilecta

This time it's the heart of Grey Lynn that's getting a piece of the culinary action.

While the neighbouring Richmond Road precinct proffers its line-up of great dining destinations, the true heart of Grey Lynn is yet to be subject to the same proliferation. Its newest resident eatery Dilecta however, could be the one to change all that.

The newcomer has caused a flourish of excitement, and we can tell you from first hand experience that the frissons are certainly justified. Owned and run by ex-proprietors of popular Kingsland cafe The Fridge, Ann Maree Rowe and Chris Faithfull, the pair have taken their apt discernment for what nearby diners want, bringing their hospo-sagacity to the otherwise deprived precinct of the Grey Lynn shops. Transcending its predecessor Mondial via a fresh, eclectic fit-out, the beauty of Dilecta is perhaps its accessibility to anyone looking for a glass of wine and a delicious bite to eat.

On the menu you can expect to find superbly rendered servings of mediterranean distinction in varied proportions; smaller plates including the pork and pistachio terrine give way to offerings ‘a little more substantial’ such as the crispy skin salmon served with pickled lemon, fennel with cucumber and herb salad. Having sampled a few of the modestly-sized plates including the incredibly flavoursome goat ribs with Ras el Hanout, Tahini yoghurt, coriander and sesame seeds alongside the perfectly prepared roasted baby root vegetables, it promptly became evident that this establishment could prosper on its food alone. The braised lamb shoulder gnocchi ‘main’ served with pumpkin, sage, peccorino and truffle oil provided as gloriously satisfying meal with the baby beet salad accompaniment going further to support our initial summations.

With further temptation lying beyond what we had ordered in the form of the cheese board, the salted caramel tart or the Valrhona chocolate truffles, we left rather taken with this lovely new local. In knowing that each dish delivers on wholesome fare in a laid-back yet romantic little space, Dilecta is definitive proof of why there’s no reason to settle for lacklustre food irrespective of the occasion. Lucky for those living nearby, this new dining spot is poised to become a favourite in the Grey Lynn ‘hood, catering to those in search after work drinks and nibbles or a romantic dinner out,.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, 4pm ’til late.
