Meet the bright new cafe that’s ‘beaming’ us up to Milford

Beam us up — we've found a worthwhile new cafe in Milford.

From the founders of Birkenhead’s cute Fika With Me comes new cafe Beam, in Milford. Having proven they’ve got what it takes to create inventive yet delicious fare, the Fika proprietors sold their original venture, moving over to Milford where The Fitout Company has created a new space that’s equally as charming.

A visit to Beam will see you met with a warm welcome, then the difficult matter of deciding what to go with your cup of Coffee Supreme. Eggs bene on a spring onion pancake with tantalising fried chicken for good measure, pannacotta muesli and a black sesame smoothie are just some of the menu options with which to start your day. Then there’s mandatory egg bubble waffle with caramel sauce, fresh fruit and candy floss — a playful plate that will win punters over with its whimsy.

While at first sight, it might look like there’s a lot going on, the Chinese-Kiwi fusion is definitely a case of ‘more is more’, both visually and flavour wise. And once you become acquainted with the friendly folk behind the counter, you’ll quite understand what all the fuss is about.

Named after the exposed ceiling beams that were found during the renovation, its sun-soaked position, and the owners’ love of “Beam me up, Scotty” — they’ve even designed a space dog who is waiting to go back to space but wants to have the last cup of coffee before he leaves — Beam is easily the most adorable and appetising café we’ve come across lately.
