Auction: The Tim & Sharrah Francis Collection

If you could systematically name a dozen of New Zealand’s most prized contemporary artists, and further, a healthy number of each of those artist’s most famous works, you’d have some idea of the staggering calibre of art that is The Tim and Sherrah Francis Collection. It is this private assemblage of works, that has been steadily growing in size and scope within the artistically fertile environs of the couple’s Wellington home since the 1970s, that will be auctioned off at Ponsonby’s Art + Object next week (7-8th September).

The elderly couple passed away earlier this year, bringing to light one of the most formidable collections of contemporary New Zealand art we’ve ever seen (arguably rivalled only by The Les and Milly Paris Collection). With 18 Toss Woollaston pieces, 18 by Gordon Walters, 14 Colin McCahons and 4 Rita Angus works comprising its backbone, and a multitude of smaller pieces from a Pablo Picasso sketch to eery portraits by the talented Yvonne Todd, this is seriously a collection worth at least perusing, if not inevitably bidding on.
