A convivial coffee-driven space has taken up residence in Auckland's art gallery district.
It was a cool autumnal evening when friends of eight years, Jay Denton and Ewan Kim (one of Auckland’s top baristas), found themselves strolling along Kitchener Street in search of a Korean BBQ fix. Little did they know that on this fateful excursion, a ‘For Lease’ sign in the window of a former art gallery would alter their destinies forever. Ok, that’s a little dramatic, but you get where we’re going with this. With the perfect spot staring them in the face, the boys seized the proverbial bull by the horns and unveiled (just last Wednesday) a bright beacon for those in dire need of a morning fix in the CBD — Curator Espresso Bar.
Located opposite the Auckland Art Gallery, looking out towards the lush Albert Park, this perky pitstop (designed by The War Room and brought to life by The Fit Out Company) is hard to miss — not just because of the eye-catching yellow feature wall and neon signage, but by virtue of the steady stream of punters that know a good brew when they smell one. It is in this inviting haven that you’ll find a satisfying steamy brew (or a mocha made with Ewan’s housemade chocolate ganache) but perhaps what we’re most excited by is the nitro-charged Brewista cold brew on tap that will no doubt become a summer staple for many. Boutique Christchurch roastery Vivace Espresso designed the smooth silky Brewista blend specifically for cold brewing, and the proof of their prowess is really in the pudding… or in this case, the brewing.
And should you find yourself a little peckish when you pop in for your daily caffeine hit, the boys have ‘curated’ a smattering of both sweet and savoury delights sure to tickle your taste buds and, of course, complement ye ol’ cup of joe. In the sweet corner, you’ll find cakes and friands, breakfast cups, and slices (made on site), as well as doughnuts that travel all the way from the Shore’s beloved Baked at Devonport. And, in the hearty department, the likes of the salmon frittata and generous gourmet sandwiches will no doubt appease even the fussiest of on-the-go CBD nine-to-fivers as well as satisfy gallery-goers in need of sustenance before or after their dose of culture.
And so, with our collective consciousness for speciality coffee showing no signs of slowing down, and the promise of sunnier, warmer days to come where lunching outdoors is nothing short of mandatory, we’re making a mental note of this little gem… we highly recommend you do the same.
