We get to know yonder the bridge with our latest discovery in Greenhithe.

When you walk into an establishment and you struggle to find a table amidst a space teeming with people, you know you’re onto something good. Take into account the fact that said establishment is yet to be open for a fortnight and is far from being located on the beaten path, and this initial finding is even more impressive.

Two weeks ago, the proximate verdancy of Greenhithe became home to The Collins. For those who don’t know where Greenhithe is, rest easy – neither did we. All we can tell you is that this is an address worthy of putting into your GPS. Assuming the tenure of a weather beaten old bungalow, this newly minted cafe and restaurant ought to be a destination in its own right. Serving up some amazing lunches and brunches by day and various delicious offerings during the later hours, we were lucky enough to stop by and bask in the hospitality of this newly established eatery.

Already full to the hilt with in-the-know punters, we ordered a selection of moreish dishes including the home-made crumpets with berry compote and whipped butter. What materialised was something quite heavenly; the crunchy golden parcels delivering a heady sweetness with every bite. For those wanting to forgo the saccharine, we suggest you try the trojan eggs or huevos benedictos. The former comprising two poached eggs served atop greek yoghurt with turkish chilli butter, while the benedictos is set to satisfy boasting a herb rosti topped with spicy chorizo, avocado, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and salsa.

Furthermore, there are various ready-made offerings designed to satiate those with little time to stop and eat during the day while an alternative evening menu seamlessly transitions to cater to the afternoon and evening crowd. With an enticing range of small and large plates designed to be shared alongside a myriad of craft beers and craft wines, we’re quite sure there’ll be a steady congregation here from day’s beginning to end.

The Collins’ characteristically generous outdoor area is already licensed, making this a destination to keep an eye on over the summer as it’s poised to host live music, mini food and wine festivals and an outdoor open air cinema. One thing we can vouch for is that our knowledge of Auckland geography has certainly improved since The Collins’ arrival.

Exhibition: Hye Rim Lee

Hye Rim Lee continues her exploration of gender, culture and technology.

Sharing her time between the creative pastures of Seoul, New York and Auckland, inter-media artist Hye Rim Lee has once again landed on our fine shores with a follow on exhibition of her transcendent conception TOKI.

Harnessing Lee’s creative prowess across digital, sculptural and performance platforms, TOKI was conceived back in 2002 as an animated representation personifying the changing roles of women. Focusing particularly on that of Asian women, TOKI started out as a sweet and juvenile character who has since matured into an overtly sexual female intertwined with the rise of technology and contemporary myth-making.

Now featuring in the local exhibition Lucid Dream, Black Rose, Glass Box, TOKI is depicted as a Princess, a Queen and a rose in this display of photography, murals and sculpture. Lee describes this particular body of work as “a dream that I seek to create a paradise between the organic world of my childhood house and garden, and the inorganic cyber world of fantasy and dream”, referring to the world of virtual relationships using sophisticated computer programs.

The result of TOKI’s gradual evolution over the years, prevalent in many of Lee’s exhibitions to date, leads to the inevitable reflection in the consumerism and beauty ideals of Western culture. Renowned for her exploration in the cultural spillover via new technologies and how they influence tradition in the East, Lee’s exhibition gives life to transgender and transcultural characters living in an imaginary world creating real-life resonance.

Be prepared for the next time you're subject to a less-than-flattering critique.

Psychologists state that increased mollycoddling at a young age has led to a generational proliferation of the ‘thin skin’ syndrome. Herein individuals are unable to withstand feedback that is simply uncomplimentary, crumbling into the throes of an existential crisis at the slightest hint of a negative opinion. Acknowledging that some people are more diplomatic in their delivery than others, being on the receiving end of criticism is often a character-challenging task. We’ve therefore compiled the following tips as a guide to preparing yourself for the day that sees you the subject of a heart-wrenchingly harsh appraisal.

1. Take it personally.
If someone claiming your child has a mild overbite isn’t personal, then we don’t know what is. Criticisms are entirely subjective and by stating something less than praiseworthy about your life, your looks or your attitude, the critic is subconsciously saying that he or she doesn’t like you as a person. Ignore the initial blow and remember that the comment has most likely been articulated out of jealousy.

2. Know your enemy.
Do a quick run list of all the faults you can think of for every person you know. This way, as soon as anyone vocalises their negative opinion of yours truly, you can immediately recollect all the things that are unbecoming of them thus negating the personal blow.

3. Adopt a defensive stance…
And if need be, vocalise the aforementioned, internalised criticisms to see how the offender likes the shoe on the other foot. The likelihood is that they won’t like it at all. In fact, they’ll probably take the return of service quite poorly and upon reflection, wish they had never proffered their negative opinion in the first place.

There’s nothing quite like warm apple pie. If fact, pie in general has an uncanny ability to comfort us with the saccharine nostalgia of mum’s home-made desserts. And if there’s any one who knows this, it’s mother-daughter duo Danielle and Suzanne Butler a.k.a. The Pie Piper.

Having taken it upon themselves to see that Aucklanders have ample access to the American style dessert pies that have until now been typically rare around these parts, it would seem there’s no one more adept at filling this void. Originally hailing from California, these pie-making maestros are passionate about their product, transforming only the best, locally sourced ingredients into extraordinary dessert pies that are then delivered to your door.

With a small weekly menu subject to constant consideration – this week features salted caramel apple, apple blueberry, banoffee, mexican chocolate – and a pie of the month, currently bourbon pecan, there’s also a more permanent selection to choose from with recipes subject to the season and makers’ whim. Choose from any of the heirloom varieties (japanese fruit, butterscotch, almond custard, buttermilk chess, pumpkin pie, vinegar pie, old-time chess pie, pecan pie), cream pies (pistachio coconut cream, peanut butter-banana cream, chocolate cream), as well as chocolate, chiffon and lemon and fruit renditions too.

It would seem that there’s no pie these ladies can’t make. Whether it’s a weekly habit you’ve managed to develop, your contribution to a dinner party or special occasion, or ordered en masse for a catered event, you can be sure that these sublime American desserts will be delivered in home-made perfection. We might just have to put these pie-making folk on speed dial from here on in.

Grumbling Fur's third album continues to charm and confound.

London duo Alexander Tucker and Daniel O’Sullivan a.k.a. Grumbling Fur have quickly established themselves as modern flag-bearers for the surreal and psychedelic pop surrealism most recently explored by contemporaries such as The Flaming Lips. Preternaturals, their third album, follows very quickly on from the brilliant Glynnaestra, and remains as experimental and enigmatic as ever.

Exploring the miraculous that is to be found in the everyday, Grumbling Fur continue to both charm and confound in equal measure. From the opening wind chimes of ‘Neil Megson Fanclub’ (Neil Megson being the real-life moniker of fellow mischief maker Genesis P Orridge), this album weave its mischief and magic in just 32 bewildering minutes. ‘All the Rays’ announces its arrival immediately, acoustic guitar, throbbing base synthesisers and a dual vocal performance of wide eyed innocence from Tucker and O’Sullivan.

Tim Burgess from The Charlatans delivers a wonderfully understated vocal on “Lightinsisters’ which juxtaposes celestial visions of satellites with the wonders of Mother Nature. ‘Feet of Clay’ is a foreboding track that seems to be a fantastical horror story despite its calm and mellow melody, while ‘Mister Skeleton’ becomes almost meditative by design, as the protagonist becomes hypnotised by his own existence. And, despite their brevity, ‘White China Pencil’ and ‘Materials Recording the Fibres of Time’ both pack powerful punches thanks to their moving ambience and sensitivity.

Grumbling Fur remain outsiders looking in, constantly exploring ways to re-shape and reinterpret pop music.  Only their imaginations will hold them back from discovering new sensibilities for us to enjoy.

How to: Freshen Up In An Airport Bathroom

Help yourself out of a transit grooming rut even when there's little at your disposal.

Eight hour plus flights are never kind. You should have politely declined the offer of a third wine and in the blur of last-minute travel plans, those essential grooming products ended up in your check-in luggage. You’ve also got just 15 minutes to freshen up before hailing a taxi to your next meeting or impressionable first date. Ah, a life lived in transit is a glamorous one indeed.

Time may not be on your side, but the run-of-the-mill airport bathroom could be. Resourcefulness is the weapon of the ill prepared, so prepare to make good use of the hand dryer, sink, soap, those brown eco paper towels and a rogue deodorant or lip gloss if you’re lucky. It’s not ideal, but it can be done. Here’s how to do it (without scooping up half of duty free first):

Hair:
Restore volume and add extra oomph to hair by locking yourself in a bathroom stall and carrying out a series of wild hair flicks. Keep the lid closed while carrying out such movements; dipping your ends in the toilet bowl isn’t part of the plan. If the room is vacant, risk looking like a lunatic and stoop to employ the whoosh of the hand dryer as your personal GHD Air.

Those with shorter hair can smooth and tame by running warm water over hands, and then combing through any tufts that have gone wayward. If you have product in your hair, dampen it and use to re-shape.

Eyes:
If there’s anything to focus on, make it the eyes; they’re not called the windows to the soul for nothing. Dab around the eye area with cold water, and then implement the same circulation-boosting massage techniques your facialist taught you to do with eye cream.

Face:
If eyeliner and mascara have smeared South, wipe away panda eyes with brown paper towels as best you can, and leave the rest of your face as it is. Lads, a splash of cold water will do wonders to restore life to your complexion

Caught out by shiny, blotchy skin? Those brown paper towels also make excellent oil absorbent sheets. Blot away until the sheen has disappeared.

Clothes:
With no spare change of wrinkle-free clothes and nary a private lounge to be found, you’ll need to revert to more primitive methods of reinvigorating your travel outfit. Put a splash of water on any stubborn creases, pull the fabric tight, and hold it under the hand dryer.
