As the season prepares to change and the temperature starts to fall, an unsettling begins in our bodies as a way of letting us know of the impending disruption. A cleanse is the perfect way to return our mind, body and spirit to a harmonious state and, as opposed to a juice cleanse which is ideal for the warmer months, a Kitchari cleanse is the perfect detoxification process to restore balance to our digestive systems during the cooler seasons — not to mention gives our liver a much-needed break after the summer’s silly season.
Focused on resetting the system, the three-day detox involves mixing split yellow mung beans with basmati rice, herbs and spices to produce a dhal-like blend, allowing for a healing and soothing effect in the gut and the intestinal walls as well as eliminating toxins from the body. Well-known in Ayurvedic medicine and often practised when in need of a little boost, unlike detoxes that call for us to down six juices a day, this restoration practice won’t feel like a chore.
