the yum cha experience
We came across a city centre yum cha restaurant that’s the perfect solution to any weekend hunger pangs.
One of our favourite weekend experiences is that of yum cha. There’s something about the ability to sit back as plate upon plate passes by your table, letting you pick and choose exactly what looks most appealing.
We recently stumbled upon Jade Dragon at SkyCity – a more luxurious version of what you would typically expect from your average yum cha restaurant. Upon arrival we were greeted with an impressive wood carved dragon at the entrance, inside the restaurant has both semi-private dining rooms for large boisterous groups and round tables for 2-6 people.
Verging on the ravenous side of hungry, we may have been a little over eager when the dishes began to appear, demolishing the first steamed dumplings in a matter of seconds. As is standard in a yum cha restaurant, the dishes came out thick and fast. We tucked into our yum cha favourites with gusto, enjoying Chinese spare ribs, black bean chicken feet, steamed pork buns and siumai (steamed money baskets) before moving on to the all important sweet stuff. Jade Dragon’s mango pudding and Wolfberry jelly rounded off our yum cha experience perfectly. We also couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sample the ‘chef’s special’ – delicate morsels shaped like little carrots, that contained a soft coconut filling.
Delicious and efficient, we recommend Jade Dragon for when you are looking for something a little more upmarket.
