the sunday roast

Come winter, there’s nothing like devouring a hearty Sunday roast to keep your cheeks rosy and belly full.

Desperate for a Sunday lunch but have no desire to labour away in the kitchen for hours? Here are our six Sunday roast options.

Neighbourhood Bar
Many a Kingsland local flocks to Neighbourhood Bar for their delicious Sunday roast, which comes complete with Mac’s apple cider reduction jus. The roast changes each week so it’s best to ring ahead if you would like to know what will be on offer. Available from 1pm onwards with live music in their sunny courtyard (and ample heating for when it’s not so sunny), this is a great option for when you want lunch to flow right through into dinner. (498 New North Road, Auckland, 09 846 3773)

The Bog Irish Bar & Restaurant
If you’re after a traditional Sunday pub roast complete with live Irish music this is it. A popular Sunday roast haunt, their roast is available from midday onwards so it’s best to book if you are thinking of coming with a large group. (196 Parnell Road, Parnell, Auckland, 09 377 1510)

Malt Bar
Sunday roast is back for the winter months at Malt Bar, with the chef’s choice of slow roasted pork, juicy beef or succulent lamb each week. Hideaway from the cold and enjoy one of their Monteith’s beers to match. (442 Richmond Road, West Lynn, Auckland, 09 360 9537)

Libertine
Every day is roast day at Libertine – Victoria Park Market’s newest dining establishment, who offer a different rotisserie meat every day and lamb on Sundays. Libertine is open for both lunch from 12.30pm and dinner from 7pm. (37 Drake St, Freemans Bay, Auckland, 09 929 2790)

 Ella Café & Lounge
Ella does a different roast every Sunday, and trust us, it’s always good. Tucked away in the cosy, candle lit interior, you will forget about the cold weather outside the moment you enter. We suggest you call ahead to find out what the roast will be, or check their Facebook page for an update. Last Sunday they served an Asian style braised pork belly with Asian greens and a creamy mash. Delish. (118 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland 09 378 7979)

Galbraith’s Ale House
This classic brew-pub is currently serving their Sunday roast, with a choice of either pork or beef with all the usual roast trimmings, including Yorkshire puddings to soak up the ample amounts of gravy. Eat it around the bar or outside in the beer garden where an outdoor fireplace keeps it cosy. Galbraith’s roast is available from midday until it runs out. (2 Mt Eden Rd, Grafton, Auckland, 09 379 3557)
