The team behind Ponsonby Road Bistro open a bold new eatery.
When any restaurant closes, as the signs come down and the newspapers go up, the rumour mill kicks into overdrive as to what will appear in its place. When said signs happened to belong to long-standing Herne Bay stalwart Andiamo, let’s just say things start to get a little hot in the kitchen for those moving in. Lucky for us, the new occupants to take over the revered corner spot are none other than the masterminds behind Ponsonby Road Bistro with their fresh new eatery, The Halcyon.
Taking its name from an idyllic period of time, where wine was flowing and the good times aplenty, owners Blair Russell and Melissa Morrow hope the revelrous theme resonates with their guests. Described as the bohemian, well-travelled younger sister of Ponsonby Road Bistro, alongside its mostly monochromatic neighbours, it’s hot — although I’m not just referring to the brightly coloured walls — the afternoon sun that streams through the interior makes for an enticing spot for lunch, dinner or drinks. Bright pops of colour are balanced by floor-to-ceiling curtains, which also function as room dividers, allowing for private dining by the fire in the back. The La Volière Haute birdcage lights are the cherries on top of the cake.
The food, created by chef Sarah Conway (also from Ponsonby Road Bistro) is the hero here, from the succinct salads menu that includes scattered sushi with organic brown rice, tuna, nori, daikon, pickled ginger and edamame to the comfort fare which comprises a massaman duck leg curry with crispy shallots and coriander. Alongside a delicious cocktail menu and a comprehensive wine list, the bar also has a substantial amount of snacks. From soft-shell crab tacos to Besan fries with curry leaves, yoghurt and tamarind, the myriad of offerings ensure there is something for everyone. Keeping with their successful formula created at Ponsonby Road Bistro, the carefully curated eatery caters to a variety of situations from lunch, an afternoon tipple or dinner with friends — just what every good neighbourhood brasserie should do.
Officially opening tomorrow evening, with manager Nick Gallagher (previously of Depot fame) ensuring each and every visit is familiar, relaxed and polished, your soon-to-be new local might just be the greatest thing to have graced Herne Bay in a while.
