moustache milk & cookie bar

We revisit our childhood via the wonders of milk and cookies.

Remember when mum made cookies and the smell of them baking wafted through the house? And once her back was turned, you’d sneak a still-warm cookie, dunk it in a tall glass of cold milk, and go “mmmmmmmm”.

These are the memories that Deanna Yang carries with her, and that’s what she has strived to recreate with her new venture: Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar.

Officially opening its doors this Friday at 7am, Moustache is set to attract hordes of folks who are after the sweet taste of nostalgia. In fact, we were there days before the opening and even then there was a nonstop succession of people knocking on the door, wanting to come in.

It’s not hard to see why. This wee shop may be tight on space, but its design and interiors are beautifully done, thanks to designers mimo-inc. Gleaming white tiled counters, blackboard walls and milk crate shelves create a homely feel; while the gorgeous milk bottle chandelier anchors the space. Best of all were the over-sized glass cookie jars labelled with the various flavours: Cinnamon, Choc Chip, Nutella, M&Ms, Cinnamon, White Choc & Macadamia, Black Forest, and Oreo Marshmallow – ’tis a sight to make anyone with a sweet tooth swoon.

As the name would imply, a cookie isn’t complete without a glass of milk to dunk it in. And so, the menu also includes “Dunking Milk” in plain, chocolate and strawberry variants, as well as a long list of milkshakes. There are no plastic milkshake syrup bottles visible however; Deanna uses premium Kohu Road Ice Creams to make flavoursome shakes like no other. (Salted caramel shake anyone?) And if you’re ever in need of an early morning coffee hit, just pop in to Moustache for a cup of delicious Supreme coffee. The smell of coffee and cookies wafting out of the front door will no doubt draw a large crowd.

With exciting cookie flavours and variants to look forward to in the next few months (think Cannibal cookies*, Gummi Bear cookies, Halloween cookies and the very intriguing Compost cookies), we’ll definitely be back very soon.

Deanna’s recommendation: Try the Black Forest cookie (premium Dutch cocoa, Whittakers Dark Chocolate, cherries) with a plain dunking milk.

Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar is just around the corner from the Civic Theatre and will be opening on Friday 14th September, 7am.

*Cannibal cookies are essentially a cookie within a cookie.
