If you were wondering what's next, Taiwanese street food might just be it.

After much ado about the many pork buns that have surfaced of late, one party has stepped up to serve their take on the Chinese delicacy amidst a menu of simple yet delicious Taiwanese street food at Mt Albert’s newest venture, Chinoiserie. The spawn of the capable team behind neighbouring eatery, L’Oeuf, brothers Jasper and Ludo Maignot, and partner Celeste Thornley, who are herein presenting an evening answer to their principal daytime venture, this playful new eatery is certainly punching above its weight in terms of flavour.

Having had the pleasure of sampling their incredibly good Gua Bao (house steamed milk buns) that come with your choice of Szechuan seared chicken thigh, satay tofu, fried squid with lemon mayo and num-dim dressing, or the unbeatable braised five-spice pork belly – you surely won’t look back after one of these little beauties hits your lips. Furthering the heady flavour experience, you might care to order any number of their complementary side dishes with the Erk’s sticky chicken nibbles packing a punch for those after some spice, and a slaw and edamame for those looking to keep it light. Not forgetting any element of the brief yet completely satisfactory menu, dessert comes in the form of an unsurpassable Taiwanese Doughnut – intoxicating in its own right, served hot and sweet with chocolate sauce and coconut thread, or there’s always their black sticky rice served with salted coconut cream.

All orders, prepared at the hands of local chef Erk Chotamungsa, come ready to take away in their very own bamboo boats, though it’s highly likely you’ll want to stay put given the abundance of cold Tsingtaos and oriental inspired cocktails on hand. Teamed with an invitingly casual and upbeat interior, complete with a dominating dragon mural by Guy Brock, Maneki nekos, lush plants and lanterns – we’re fairly sure we’ve discovered a newfound local favourite.

Open Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm ’til late with hours increasing toward Christmas.
