aotea square ices over
Winter is about to get a whole lot more interesting as Aotea Square prepares to host its very own ice rink.
Finally. Auckland city is getting an outdoor ice rink. All around the world, outdoor rinks have long been a sign that the winter has arrived and not wanting to miss out on all the fun, Aotea Square has put up its concrete hand to host it.
Transforming the inner-city square into a rosy-cheeked winter wonderland, The Edge and Paradice Ice Skating will open the the ice rink to the masses this Saturday the 23rd of June. The rink will stay open until the 31st of July and is sure to draw in a variety of skaters, from elegant figure skaters showing off in their tighter than tight leotards, to people like myself, who are much more likely to cling to the sides fearfully before tentatively venturing out into the center. Free skating lessons, skate demonstrations and snow sculpture making competitions are just some of the activities on offer, plus the rink is covered so there is no need to worry about temperamental Auckland weather.
Our tip? Be sure to avoid the wet jeans cliché and opt for something more ice friendly, that way you can skate away to your hearts content. Let’s hope they include a mulled wine station for post skating drinks.
Open from 10am till 10pm daily from this Saturday.
