Art. Coffee. Doughnuts. Enough said.
Like the best things in life, Mt Eden’s latest little personality started out as a joke, playfully thrown about in conversation amongst three friends who felt an ever-evolving art-filled space fuelled by good coffee and delicious doughnuts would be… quite simply… cool. And so it was, when a not-to-be-missed opportunity presented itself in the shop lot next to Mt Eden’s iconic Crystal Palace theatre that Olly came to be.
Named after what doughnuts were known as prior to the Revolutionary War — olykoeks or oily cakes — the epic mural sure to offer visual fodder while you wait for your freshly-made cup of Allpress Joe (or grab a Green Leaf Organics juice) is a testament to the founders Chloe, Alex and Bryan’s deep ties with Auckland’s thriving art scene. A collaborative masterpiece between Toni Gill, Bryson Naik and J. Richardson, their framed works also adorn the walls currently until a new curation by the founders takes over each month. And, changing alongside it are the doughnuts (made by a private baker with input from the crew). Currently, a succinct selection of strawberry jam-filled, matcha glazed, Oreo cookies and cream, dark choc and coconut and a cinnamon sugar variation for the purists will suffice but we can’t wait to see what we’ll be wrapping our laughing gear around in the future.
With plans to open up a shared office space upstairs, complete with caffeine fix costs built into the fee (doughnuts upon negotiation), we think it’s only fair that you roll on in and meet Olly in person and let ‘him’ ply you with fried dough while expanding your artistic horizons.
