Love Bucket, K’ Rd

This old school tavern is serving a decidedly new age assortment of delicious cocktails and bar snacks.

We’ve long known about the uptake at K’ Rd’s new Food Workshop arcade, having recently marked the openings of the Moustache flagship milk and cookie bar and El Sizzling Lomito respectively. But arguably, what (we may not have known) we’ve really been waiting for has been the ambient little bar out the back — a hard-to-encapsulate honky-tonk watering hole that goes by the very cute name of Love Bucket.

The establishment we encountered certainly isn’t one to be pigeon-holed. The vibe is somewhere between Tennessee bar and Torquay tavern, with old-school speakers suspended from the walls countered by chocolate-coloured sheepskin hides strewn across the booth seating area, and a Victorian-esque bar backed by plenty of crystal vessels. Hardwood floors give way to full-height windows that on a sunny day, can open right up and let the fresh air and sunshine stream into what would otherwise be a very dark space.

But let us clarify, Love Bucket is anything but confused and the integrity of what’s coming from behind the bar can be asserted by their ex-Masu manager Brandon Walker whose mission it has been to keep things interesting. At any given time there are a series of cocktails on tap — probably the ‘Storm in a Bucket’ (Demerara rum, gold rum, lime and ginger) and the ‘Puncha-rillo!’ (tamarillo, spiced umeshu and dry cider) amongst others. The highballs are a flavour-infused take on the three-ingredient classics, and wines are all natural or as biodynamic as possible and will likely be on high rotation.

As for the bar snacks, well they’re worthy of coming in for alone. Designed to be salty and classically European (i.e. perfect for drinking) you’ll find a fair bit of cured meat mixed with pickles, cheese and delicious toasties including one with beef bresaola, sweet gerkins and beer mustard. So, if you’re into drinking all things particularly quaffable and considered with a side something delicious, you might find that Love Bucket is extremely suitable.
